Playing on the South Side since 1901 was a great run. Won 4 World Series, tossed another, Disco Demolition, the tornado siren dealio, Ligues, shaking down Illinois, etc.

However, it's clear the party is over. Literally no one cares for the White Sox. 26th in attendance (goosed up by suckers who got STH this year), last in TV ratings, last in the Central, last in farm system, a crooked owner, a dysfunctional front office and sadly desperate business side. Add it all together and it's clear they need to move.

This franchise is a zombie. Simply existing and aimlessly walking around and suriving only from sucking the nectar of Illinois taxpayers. Time to take an ax to it's head.

You can't tell me Las Vegas, Montreal, or Charlotte wouldn't provide a brighter future for the Sox. Without a doubt in it's current state the White Sox are the shittiest organization in MLB. Having Jerry & crew sell the team and having them move is the solution to reviving the Sox. Any other course of action will just extend the Sox reign as shittiest org in MLB.

Not even close to being considered at this point. Jerry has to be 6 feet under for that to happen.

What will keep the Sox alive is a move to Arlington Heights! That's crazy but it would bring in fan revenue and spark the franchise.

That's a completely terrible idea.

Manfred isn't Jerry's guy. Doesn't he see the Jerry is pretty much Loria-ing the Sox. He's stubbornly tanking this franchise. Manfred should inform Jerry it was a good run but it's time for a committed owner to take over and give Montreal a shot.

It's not like the 30,000 Sox fans in the Chicagoland will care they're gone. They don't care now so it's no big deal.

I dont think Jerry is tanking at all. he is going for it and will continue to go for it.

Stop trolling. Montreal is dead as a doornail as far as baseball goes. Purging the East Island of its Jews and other assorted anglophones sabotaged the baseball fanbase forever long before Loria came in and gutted the operation. With all the new immigrants replacing the anglophones who buggered off to Ontario, Florida, and elsewhere, it's a hockey/soccer town now. The only hope Montreal has is Bell deciding to buy a team and build a stadium so that TSN has anything that someone might want to watch.

I wish Montreal were still in the National League but MLB and a racist separatist government killed baseball there.

Montreal was just one suggestion. Plenty of Anglos that would support a baseball team in Montreal. The tumbling Canadian dollar scares me more. When sustainable competitive baseball payroll is $80M+ that's a large hindrance.

Charlotte or Las Vegas would be my top two choices for the Sox. Sox already have a presence in Charlotte with a minor league team and ample Chicago transplants.

Ultimately, there's no question the White Sox need to move. It was a great run but when everyone stops giving a shit (owner, fan, management...everyone) that's a signal for a change.

Chicago is going to be a Cubs town for the next 20 years. The Sox have no future. Time to make the proactive move to Charlotte and get that up and going before it Tampa ugly on 35th/Shields.

I'm going to say for the next two, until they fail to win a goddamn thing and Theo and Maddon are run out of town like all those before them. But maybe it will be twenty. Cub fans seem to have a long learning curve.

People said this about the White Sox when they won the World Series, and we're making this proclamation because the Cubs are fifth in the National League at the deadline?

Charlotte can't support the NFL and NBA and MLB, plus college teams in the region. Isn't Bank of America moving a bunch of its operations back to Boston? Raleigh is a better bet for MLB as far as North Carolina goes, and Raleigh is a terrible idea too.

Boy all it takes is a no hitter and for the Giants to get red hot, and the Cubs fans start throwing all sorts of darts at the Sox. Its pretty funny, and pathetic all at the same time.

Nobody said that? I have no idea where you get this stuff from....yes, it was a Sox highpoint of the last 30 years, but even 2005 and 2006

2006 is the Attendance high point for the Sox of 2.9M and the Cubs still outdrew them with 3.1M

I am sure a few people said the Sox are going to take over, but that guy isnt around here anymore....

come on....no better scenario can exist for the Sox than winning a World series combined with the cubs doing poorly and when that happened, they still arent more popular...dont know what other evidence one needs ?

THIS will change the Sox luck. Play more day games and appeal to the white suburban crowd who has the money to spend.

100% correct. Jerry made a huge mistake not building new Cominskey Park in the suburbs. He should have just conceded the city to the Cubs. The White Sox fan base in the city is almost non existent. Suburbanites would flock to Sox games in Arlington Heights, or whatever suburb.

I said I would nave been fine if Ricketts built a new Wrigley Field in Rosemont. That certainly would not have been a concession to the Sox as the Sox are barely on the radar screen. The Cubs will draw anywhere. The Sox aren't drawing in the city. Cubs fans out number Sox fans by 10X.

What about extermination camps for the remaining Sox fans and their families? I'm just brainstorming here.

You're being extremely naive if you think there would be no long-term ramifications of one team being 20 miles from the Loop and the other being about three. Both teams belong in city limits and on their respective sides of town. I don't want the Cubs in Rosemont, I don't want the Sox in Tinley Park, and I don't want either one in Arlington Heights.

It's actually the Cubs who have a grim long-term future.

The city is hot again, it's where people want to live. Aside from the immediate vicinity of bigfan the Sox own the city. They own all of Cook Co, which 20 years from now nobody will want to live outside of. The Cubs own Iowa, Indiana and the collar counties/downstate (to me these two are identical); a giant pile of "who-the-fuck-cares".

What keeps the Cubs chugging is a tourist trap ballpark and a Red Sox-ian mythos that appeals to white people. Erasing all that with a tone deaf owner who wants to corporatize the franchise (THE WHOLE APPEAL WAS THE LACK OF TACKY CORPORATE SHIT REMEMBER) will kill the Cubs.

This city has changed sides before, and will again. Writing's on the wall. What few actual Cubs fans remain will throw in the towel when the plan fails (as it obviously will).

Also, the MLB will never move another franchise. They sure as fuck aren't going to move their only franchise that draws a substantial number of black fans.

Baseball is quickly losing interest among youth and becoming a sport for retirees. Even though the Cubs are relatively good their TV ratings are middle of the pack and their attendance is only 7th in MLB.

There are less people who care about baseball in Chicago. Unfortunately for the 30K-60K remaining Sox fans in the Chicagoland their franchise is doing nothing about grabbing a smaller pie. You have the Cubs marketing their young stars everywhere, upgrading the ballpark, investing in major talent, scouting, Dominican/Venezuela, minor leagues, promotions (4th of July fireworks), etc. Cubs are pouring money into the organization to improve every aspect.

The Sox, on the other had, seem to take pride in alienating their fanbase with shitty announcers, exclusionairy seating policies and terrible on-field product. It's like their trying to outdo Loria in destroying a fanbase.

It's crummy that a team that's resided in Chicago for over 100 years will have to move but it's reality. I see the Chicago Fire eclipsing the Sox in relevancy within 3 years at the latest.

I think the truth is somewhere in the middle on this. While the city has "changed sides" in the past, I think we're pretty much crystallized at Cubs > Sox. That doesn't mean there's a 10:1 ratio of Cubs fans to Sox fans, which is simply fantastic bullshit, nor that the Sox have to move to godforsaken San Antonio, but the Sox are pretty well entrenched as the second team now. They couldn't capitalize on their run of competent seasons in the '90s, they couldn't capitalize on the Cubs tanking a few years ago, and they couldn't even capitalize on winning the damn World Series. Years of stubborn and aloof marketing against John McDonough's wizardry with the Cubs ruined them, and now McDonough is doing it to them again with the Blackhawks in the battle for the city's #4 team.

Nevertheless, the ceiling for operating a team in Chicago is always going to be higher than it would be in [insert ~2.5MM-population metro here]. We're talking about a major world city here. It's the same argument people have made for the Rays being better off at the Meadowlands as a third New York team than having Tampa Bay to themselves and doing fuck-all with it, which will never happen, but is not without merit. There's no reason why the population and corporate base can't support two baseball teams, other than "the owner of the White Sox is a creepy old jock-sniffer who does things his own way." And even that will have to change because he'll have to die eventually.

Saying that no one will want to live outside of Cook County in twenty years isn't a prediction I'm comfortable making, because there will always be Scoreheads, but the rapid development of the South Loop, West Town, and other non-north-side neighborhoods is something that could easily have long-term benefits for the White Sox should they choose to capitalize on it. Likewise, I don't think the Cubs have a grim long-term future, per se, just one that's somehow greedier and more soulless than when they were owned by a publicly traded media conglomerate that used them as a TV show.

If anything poses a fatal threat to the Sox, it's not the Cubs, it's a precipitous drop in interest in baseball, which obviously will take down both teams.

Anyway, fuck the Chicago White Sox, long live the Chicago White Sox.

The Chicago Fire aren't even as popular as Polish exhibition games. They're just a self-serious version of the Kane County Cougars.

A move to say Tinley Park off of I-80 probably would of been good for the Sox if done years ago.

It may have been good for a while, but I don't trust that Southland exurbia not to dry up. I think being right next to a major expressway, two L lines, and a south-suburban commuter line (two of 'em if Metra can ever get the Southeast Line up and running) is pretty damn accessible.
