"As for the Cubs, rival executives tell Stark that Chicago is offering a deal centered around Starlin Castro and/or Javier Baez (though it’s unclear whether both would conceivably be included together). But Philadelphia is not enthused about either player. "

No shit.

I'm sure the Phillies are saying Addison Russell and the Cubs are responding Castro/Baez.

I may be as dumb as Kenny Williams but I think I'd take Castro and Baez for Shark.

Cubs should be sellers at the deadline.

The Astros have acquired Kazmir for (2) Tier B or C prospects. Cubs missed out if the asking price was that low.

Beane has been getting pantsed the last couple of years

I would have figured his style would be to take the compensatory pick in the off season

The Cubs are currently a flawed Wild Card team.

I insulted you on the second reply, not the first.

All the other teams have figured out Castro sucks. Baez is hurt. Kinda hurts the trade leverage.

Castro for zobrist and a low level prospect intrigues me. I think Castro is a lost cause here. He needs a change of scenery. Zobrist is a rental but could easily be resigned seeing as he is joes right hand man on the roster. Castro is cheap for a starting ss and has been an all star.

Not sure Beane takes on 40M for Castro.

#Cubs have discussed Starlin Castro with #Padres, sources tell @Ken_Rosenthal and me. Cubs have inquired on San Diego starting pitchers.

Rumors are surfacing that the #Cubs and #Padres are close to a deal to bring James Shields to Chicago. Do with that what you will.

8:02pm: Whatever other talks the teams may have had, Chicago is not making a run at Shields, Buster Olney of ESPN.com tweets.

Spiegs tweeted that his good sources said the Cubs were very close to getting Shields. Within a minute, Buster Olney tweeted the Cubs were not looking at Shields.

I am not sure how Olney can be so positive they are not in on Shields.

He was clearly someone they wanted in the offseason and would seem like the exact type of situation they would be interested in right now. Not a rental, but someone who will be around and will not cost the same as Hammels.

He is almost 34, and is owed $21M for each of the next three years. I'll bet Bernstein loves it.

Now speculation is that it is Ross that is being targeted by Cubs

Is Almora considered available? He has kind of been the forgotten prospect. His d would play in that spacious OF in Petco. Maybe a Castro, Almora and zagunis for Ross and venable?

I wish they could talk the brewers into Olt or Villenueva and a low level throw in prospect for parra.

Lake and Alcantara are going to run out of options before they ever contribute so I hope they are involved in talks.

Go get Papelbon (as long as Philly eats at least 7M of the 13M for next year)...

Big Game James needs a big outfield to keep his ERA under 5. Cubs will dodge a bullet if they pass on him
