nobody wins or loses this argument until I see the last five world series winners and how good statistically their bullpen was.

now that's true. The "more bites at the apple" theory is really the best. Playoffs are a complete crapshoot. Even with 7 games.

There are certainly more edumacated people than me in statistics so work this one out for me:

If each playoff is completely random does it increase your chances by appearing in multiple years. Isn't each year a 1:12 chance (approximated)?

Isn't this like the coin flip example where there is a 1:2 chance of an outcome each and every time?

If this is true, wouldn't the best use of resources be to load up in one year to cut down on the randomness of a particular year (and I don't subscribe to it being completely random)?

Not sure what the stats would say but the Cards bullpen in 2011 was hit or miss...bailed out a lot of early exits from the starters but also blew a lot of late inning leads/ties.

Oh, and they had Edwin Jackson starting games.

What I've learned today is that the board is better when both teams suck.

Do you think they will get the level of pitching next year that they have gotten this year?

Actually, I expect the pitching to be better. I expect they will sign Price, or another quality starter this winter to go along with Arietta and Lester at the front end of the rotation. Ramirez should be back to 100% which he has not been all year and he's an exceptional relief pitcher when healthy. But the greatest improvement will be from the young position players who will benefit from a full season in the majors and learning the rotations around the league/ making adjustments.

So it looks like the Cubs offense can make up for some bullpen issues after all.

Weird how the bullpen portion of a baseball game isn't played in a vacuum.

Your passive aggression is cute.

Two blown ninth inning leads in four games, and you are still thumping your chest?

You probably know less about baseball than any poster on this site.

Fanboy status confirmed.

I'm a Sox fan and I can distance my bias from the facts:
- Joe Maddon is a good Manager and I'd love to have him manage my team
- The Cubs are going to be in the Wildcard race and I believe they have a good chance of getting in

I also agree that there' a lot of overblown hype on the Cubs. I do not think they're remotely close to winning anything this year, but they're certainly closer than the White Sox.

Carry on with the pissing matches.

I enjoy your baseball posts, but I think you may need to reassess your understanding of the word "mundane."

We're solely discussing 'stay-at-home' entertainment options. A Mr. Mom would have way more of that than I, but no matter if you have 16 hours at home or 4, you need to find a way to wind down and relax.

I've smoked before. Several times. And the most recent time wasn't all that long ago.

But it isn't something to do. It is something you maybe do while you're doing something else. And even then...little to no payoff.

If you're that bored where smoking up sounds like an activity...I'm sorry your life isn't more rewarding.
