He was clearly someone they wanted in the offseason and would seem like the exact type of situation they would be interested in right now. Not a rental, but someone who will be around and will not cost the same as Hammels.

Olney would know. And he wouldn't tweet that unless he really knew.

Reading between the lines it's got to be Hammels or Papplebon right?
I think it may be time to question the integrity of barstoolcarl.

Supposedly a clubhouse cancer.

Telling that a team in contention is interested in dumping him.

No blue check mark, but believe real account: MT @McCulloughStar: Can confirm: KC has acquired Ben Zobrist for Sean Manaea and Aaron Brooks.

Agree. This team is in desperate for a closer. Motte is done. They got a few nice weeks from him, but he sucked up til then, and now he's back to sucking. Soriano is toast. I could see that right away in his first outing. He had nothing. I faced better pitchers in college. He needs to be dropped as soon as they deal for a closer.

So, Zobrist gets traded to another team without a peep of indignation from the Cult of Theo

I speak for myself, but I am more than happy if the Cubs sit on their hands and keep the prospects. I believe in the Plan, and we have already seen a remarkable turnaround from last year. I have faith that Jedd and Theo have not seen the right deal come along, and if they do see a good deal, they will take it. I am in no hurry to deal our young prospects for a Cubs team that at best will make a one game playoff.

Didn't Los Doyers just tell him that they weren't shopping him?

they already have a closer named Hector Rondon. Why they are playing "Wheel of Shit" with these other old-timers and dead arms in the closers role is beyond me. day after day we watch the young rookies at the plate strike out and make shitty plays in the field as part of the growing process, and here they have a guy with a live arm who is putting up good numbers and they are using him to set up for Motte and Soriano? crazy.

How are the Royals ever going to recover from his acquisition to get back in line with their plan?

Papelbon to Nationals

Here are Nationals’ former closer Drew Storen’s comments regarding the Jonathan Papelbon trade. You know, the trade that made him the former Nats closer:

“All I’m going to say is, I’m aware of the move and I’ve talked to Mike about it. I’ve talked to my agent about it,” Storen said. “We’ve had some ongoing discussions. Until those have progressed, I’m just going to leave it at that. No comment for now. But as the situation goes, I’ll keep you guys posted.”

Not exactly the team-first sort of comment the Nats likely hoped for. But then again, being a closer comes with a weird set of politics that make me-first more valuable than team-first in many instances. Thanks to the save stat — still the only stat that dictates a player’s usage rather than the other way around — the way you make serious money as a relief pitcher is to get those fancy and magical saves.

Of course, a good way to solidify yourself as a Brand Name relief pitcher is to have some big innings, including setup innings, in the playoffs. That’s how we all met Mariano Rivera way back in the day. The Papelbon acquisition improves the Nationals and makes the playoffs far more likely. So whether Storen is thinking me-first or team-first or some combination of both, this can be a good thing for him long-term.

I don't think the acquired Papelbon to get rid of Storen, that is a hell of a 1/2 punch late in games.

No, that certainly wouldn't have been the plan.

But Storen having "ongoing discussions" with Mike Rizzo and his agent and waiting for "progression" - that certainly sounds like asking for a trade, or "pay me more to keep me happy."

Heard that Papelbon waived his no-trade but insisted on contractual language that he would always be the closer for Washington.

That just wasn't for the Nationals, that was for any team he was going to be traded to.
