Just curious what others have had to deal with...the fiancé just took our 7 year old Shit Tzu to a specialist, she's had blood in her urine past few month(s) and the general vet couldn't figure what was up. In and out with a body scan and a urinalysis, $750. Damn pricey, but what can I do, I can't tell her no on this and let the dog suffer, she would be crushed. Maybe some of you guys have ran into worse?

Dog had a bump on his forehead. Grew rapidly all day to the size of a quarter. Took him in, vet does a biopsy workup, sends it out for cancer screening. $500.

Call me 3 days later....its Ringworm...come on in and buy some $25 shampoo!

Fuckers.

You have to love doctor bills. For pets it is worse because you have no insurance.

I had a 6 year old Dalmatian that threw out her back legs and was paralyzed. I take her into the vet, who then refers us to a specialist. I told the original vet, I wanted to put the dog down. The dog was 80 pounds, my wife was pregnant, and the dog could not walk. They looked at me like I was crazy. They would not put the dog down. Well apparently, there are vets that do back surgery on dogs in these situations. I had to go visit the specialist. The vet took one look at her and said you'd be better off putting her down. DUH! Surgery was about $5,000 and would take up to one year for rehab.

I think I was out about $500 just to have my dog put down. Lots of stress.

I also had a $1,200 bill to fix a broken leg on a $29 rabbit. The first visit was only $200, but who would have known you'd have to come back a dozen times after the first visit.

The rabbit was small when she needed the surgery. It was basically akin to a kid having a broken finger. They needed to set it and put it in a split with pins.

It would have healed on its own. The smaller the bone, the faster it heals . You got hosed brother.

Should have asked your kid if they'd rather have one $1,200 rabbit or forty $29 rabbits.

someone really paid money to get a rabbit worked on?

A major reason why I will not have a dog right now. Kids are way too damn expensive to throw on vet bills as well.

VPI Pet Insurance. We have the maximum coverage and pay $58/mo.

I was reimbursed ~60% of our dog's spay cost.

Just make sure he gets his medicine six times a day, and keep his tail elevated.

My first dog had an eye ulcer which is essentially a scratch on his eye. Had to go to a specialist in Milwaukee for that one. I think it was like $600.
It wasn't going to kill him or anything but jeez the dog needs his eye right? Got it done and about 18 months later he got one in the other eye.
That was about the worst of it. When I got my current dog neutered that wasn't too cheap but I could kinda plan for that one. I got my money's
worth though since the dog bit the vet after he took his nuts. We still go to the same office but the vet that got bit refuses to see my dog.

Two things:

1) It didn't start out at $1,200. That was the cumulative cost.

2) We had just gotten the rabbit as a present for my daughter. She was holding the rabbit for the first time, and it jumped out of her arms. Unlike a cat, rabbits do not land gracefully.

I didn't have the heart to release it into the wild with a broken leg nor did I want to put it down. Yes, I know it seems stupid to spend that much on a rabbit.

Every time somebody recommends a doctor, he's always the best. "Oh, is he good?" "oh, he's the best. This guy's the best." They can't all be the best. There can't be this many bests. Someone's graduating at the bottom of these classes, where are these doctors? Is somewhere, someone saying to their friend, "you should see my doctor, he's the worst. Oh yeah, he's the worst, he's the absolute worst there is. Whatever you've got, it'll be worse after you see him. He's just, he's a butcher. The man's a butcher."? And then there's always that, "Make sure that you tell him that, you know me." Why? What's the difference? He's a doctor. What is it, "Oh, you know Bob! Okay, I'll give you the real medicine. Everybody else, I'm giving Tic-Tacs.

I hear ya man, I was not trying to be critical of you. Shit happens.

Just a good reminder to me of why we will continue to have no pets

I love animals. Rabbits and dogs are my favorite. Pretty sure my daughter will be a vet. She has been volunteering at the Anderson Animal Shelter for a few years. She is great with pets despite her earlier bad start.

I've own eight different rabbits. The one I "saved" was the best of the bunch. Funny how that happens.

yeah, it's not the animals that you necessarily pay for, but rather the wives/daughters feelings...love them women

The only pet I've had in my lifetime where I was willing to spend low four figures for medical issues was my last cat. The damn thing was the only pet I've seriously considered a member of the family. I used to get complaints from neighbors 3-4 blocks away about the litters of kittens he was responsible for.

One old guy had the nerve to get heated when he saw my cat & I sitting in my parents' yard back around 89-90. For a minute I thought we were going to have to go. Knowing my cat & his proclivities, all the fellas laughed about it & agreed that me (& my cat) should've lumped that old bastard up.
