It's kind of an odd thing to tell a player...in essence, "Sorry Starlin, we tried everything we could to get rid of you, but there were no takers."

They didn't tell him that exact quote. They tried to trade him, couldn't, and then told him he wasn't going to be traded.

Yeah, I know, but why even tell someone they are on the block? Nothing good comes of it.

I picture Castro botching a routine grounder and the Cubs losing the 1 game playoff for the wildcard.

I see why the Cubs want Kimbrell but what am I missing on Tyson Ross? His numbers indicate a number 3 pitcher.

The way Maddon is handling Starlin is reminiscent of the scene in Moneyball where Beane tells DePodesta "They're ballplayers, just tell them." All this wishy washy shit about telling guys their not getting traded while a fucking childrens magician is on his way to the clubhouse is fucking retarded.

Also, nobody wants to take out the Cubs trash for them. If you want Baez, Starlin or Alcantara gone the return is going to be a lot less than what you would've gotten a year ago. Theo and Jed aren't going to indulge in that reality, so the Cubs aren't getting shit.

That's why you don't give him away. Making a deal just for the sake of making a deal is foolish.

I disagree. I would trade him for pretty much anything. Even for a burlap sack full of drowned cats. He's pretty useless here and not part of the future any longer. Dude burnt up. At least here.

The problem is that refusing to trade Castro based on his "all-time low" value is the same mistake investors make when they hold on to dog stocks that are at rock bottom. They think that the stock just has to rebound, at least to the price they paid...when obviously the "market" couldn't care less what you paid for it.

The fact is that Castro has become bad and his "team-friendly" contract has become a liability, and while there is a chance he can improve, every other team knows the risk/reward as well as the Cubs. His value is his value.

It's not making a deal to make a deal. He is clogging the path of others.

I'd still bet on a rebound if I were a trading partner.

Not according to 31 MLB general managers. At least right now he has pretty much zero value.

‏@Ken_Rosenthal: Sources: #Cubs among teams engaged in ongoing dialogue with #Indians about deal for Carrasco. Teams continuing to call CLE, make offers.

4.03 ERA but 2.83 FIP and 2.73 xFIP
K-BB% - 22% 6th in the AL (http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/pitching/_/league/al/sort/strikeoutToWalkRatio/type/expanded-2)
Team control through 2020 max salary in 2020 of $9.5M

Could really do a whole lot worse ... might be a better overall fit than Tyson Ross.

There's a report out there the Blue Jays offered Daniel Norris, Jeff Hoffman, and Dalton Pompey for Carrasco. That's arguably their top 3 guys in the system.

and yes I know Norris and Hoffman have since been traded.

True, but since that deal doesn't exist anymore the Indians can't use it as a measuring stick ... not logically anyway. Today's best offer isn't necessarily better than yesterday's.

I like Carrasco a lot (really like the Cleveland starters overall). That would be a good get. I wonder why Cleveland would sell him?

I love what the Brewers got back from the Orioles in the Parra trade, also like the young talent they have acquired overall.

I'm guessing they want a bat or two; or they're all high this morning.

Sure they can because they don't "have" to trade him. They can afford to wait because there is no risk losing him. If yesterday's offer wasn't good enough they don't have to take a lesser offer today.

He's better than kinda ok. He has 137K's in 127 innings. That transfers to any park.

And they need a #5, so a good 3 is fine.

Kimbrel is great but how long will he last? Im of the belief that you find closers within your own system. Most closers dont last and Kimbrel has been doing it for years already. Maybe he's one of the guys that lasts, but I wouldnt bet on it.

@BusterOlney: There is some speculation within the industry about a possible BOS/Cubs/Padres three-way blockbuster taking shape. Lots of pieces that fit.

Agreed for the most part but his contract is not a liabiltiy. 10million for a starting player is nothing in 2015.
