I was watching what I believe is the British version of Nova and what is up with the teeth? Austin Powers is underselling it.

My understanding is that it's mostly due to the British Dental Association, their main review board (something like our ADA, I guess?), having little real authority over practitioners as most of the prescribed malpractice penalties have no teeth.
