Severed? Then something happened if a 4 inch cast iron pipe was severed...cracked is another story and while thats not good either, thats seepage.

Severed, means someone else did something that severed a pipe and you should go ask about that one....

Takes a well informed man to speak on tankless systems when they have never purchased one, seen one, installed one or removed on. Know anyone like that?

Tree roots are often the culprit.

If you, or a buddy, knows how to use any sort of equipment, you can rent a ditch witch and fix it yourself for a 1/4 of that cost or less.

Plumbers did some rooting, said that they hit something hard and couldn't root any more. Sent a camera down the sewer line and found some standing water in the pipe. Apparently shit's not being drained to the sewer line but my front yard doesn't smell like ass. Not yet anyways.

That's a ridiculous price , have a guy send a camera in..he can locate the area for you n your buddy.. get to digging ...I'm assuming clay pipe ? Probably had a tree on parkway or front lawn ? Roots grabbed that moist pipe n crushed the shit out of it...Literally!

My house is over a hundred years old and has a clay pipe sewer. The neighbors hackberry tree has set up shop in it. I have the roots removed about once a year and flush copper sulfate down the shitter, to kill any root growth, anytime we're going to be away for more than one day. It has to sit for a time in the line to be effective. I've been doing this dance and kicking the can down the road for almost 15 yrs.

I'm gonna guess tree roots fucked my shit up because the house was unoccupied for a year prior to us moving in. Gonna go over the fine print in my home owners policy tonight.

FYI, this is why the bill was proposed to have all homes sewer cammed before closings. That and some plumbers union paid some politicians.

Nah..you ain't Gona find dick ...its fairly common...usually the tree is already chopped n stumped when the house sells ..the roots keep growing n lookn 4 moisture ... Everything should be CVCP ...it's better than Clay, Cast or Galvanized .. But the Plumbers Union will never let that happen in the City.

Me n my nephew did my aunts a few years back..cost 600$

We did the digging n backfilling ...they just brought camera n marked for us ..we dug 8' down 3 feet wide to the pipe ..n they cut clean n coupled it ...lil stone n back fill that clay n saved 2 k . good luck .

Sewer work is a tankless business.

Almost 100% certain this is what happened. Plumbers showed us the indentation of where they think a tree in the yard used to be. I am also almost 100% certain that the fucks you used to live in this house knew about this but did enough to the house to claim plausible deniability with respect to root intrusion and/or sewer line problems. I'm fucking stewing here right now......

Before digging I would try the copper sulfate. Years ago our sewer backed up. The plumber wanted to do a $1,200 dig but someone (my dad?) told me first try the copper sulfate. We did and it solved it. It won't cure a collapsed line but if it is tree root intrusion then it very well could.

I think our roots came from an old parkway tree that had been removed. As previously mentioned even though the tree is gone the roots could still be active.

I can't tell if it's a root problem or a pipe problem. The plumbers used a rooter but said it was getting caught on something and they didn't want to snap the rooter. Sent a camera down and saw water sitting in the line, not draining to the main sewer line. Didn't see many roots. To be honest I don't think they even identified the problem, they just couldn't root any further and came to the conclusion that the pipe is crushed/detached or something is in the way.

Feeling pretty hopeless at this point.
