I think Castro being... whatever some fans think he is... is the biggest crock of shit going in Chicago right now. One or two gaffs from an extremely young player over almost five full seasons? The defense needs some work sure, but I don't recall mental errors last season. He still had his best defensive year, and I believe he will keep improving, at SS or 3B or wherever.

He has improved every season mental gaffes excepted. He is a talented player for sure. Going to hit for more power as he matures as all good ones do.

Who are the guys who hit for more power as they "matured", steroid era aside? I'm not saying there aren't any out there, but I think the idea that hitters regularly develop power as they age (something I've read actual scouts say as well) is unsupported by evidence.

I don't think a player's body is filled out until mid to late 20's. I don't have the statistics you're looking for...but it is commonly said with scouts in all sports. Better workout habits...body maturing... you can visually see the guys get bigger and stronger. I believe that it would lead to more power in baseball.

Guys are coming up to the majors younger than ever now...we have more and more of a chance of seeing guys like Castro at 20 versus 25 versus 28...see how their power changes.

No, dont be purposely stupid. It's not about buying the hype. You can do anything you want. If you let other fan's over the top excitement bother you, then yes, you lose and yes, your priorities are out of order.

It has nothing to do with believers or not, so again, stop with the purposeful stupidity.

And in a hilarious twist of irony, your original "every prospect will bust because its the cubs and cubs suck lol" is just as stupid as the Elmhurst Steve's of the world but on the other side.

The best pitch to hit in any at-bat is usually going to be the first pitch. Obviously, the pitcher wants to start 0-1 so he's likely to throw a strike..

ALDS 2014, B'more vs Detroit. Tigers up a few runs on the Orioles, but their BP loads the bases. Showalter brings in Delmon Young--a notorious first pitch swinger--to pinch hit with bases juiced and 1 out.

Both announcers on the TV broadcast note repeatedly while Young's taking his practice swings that Young's a first pitch swinger. So of course the Tigers reliever
Soria grooves a strike right over the plate:

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-bas ... ead-double

"and everybody knows he's ready to fire on the first one...."

btw, prolly a rookie manager mistake not to take the break in the action to go out and confab with your reliever about how to handle the pinch hitter. Jog out, "don't give him anything to hit on the first pitch." jog back to the dugout.

To be fair every pitch thrown by the Tigers bullpen last year was grooved right down the middle.

Gonna platoon him?

Image

He hasn't hit RHP well since returning from injury last season--and difficult to know if his prior numbers vs RHP were worth much as they were mostly single A pitchers. Last season facing AA kinda gleamed over his weakness vs RHP, tho he had a substantial LHP/RHP split all season. If he struggles this much vs RHP at AAA...

Interviewed by Jessie Rogers after yesterdays game...you can see how much comfortable the guy is. His first day, he was almost scared to speak.

Russell will be the best "all around player" of all the prospects that have been called up. Did you see that swing last night for the HR? SMOOOOTH.

Or he somehow had a .762 slugging percentage.

Either way, Starlin Castro has had four complete seasons around or above .762 OPS. Two weeks doesn't make Addison Russell good.

already a FAR SUPERIOR fielder. the bat will come

simply, russell's baseball intelligence at 21 trumps whatever is rattling in Castro's noggin.

a vet like castro shouldn't shit his pants as consistently as he does. he's an embarrassment.

At 21, we were praising Castro just the same.

And again, Russell's fielding percentage isn't immensely better.

Different make up and Russell has been learning on the job. Unlike Castro he appears to get it.
