3 quality starts in the #5 role. So are the Cubs going to send him back to Iowa?

They likely won't be able to. He will get a chance on another team.

But again, this is why you aren't a GM, and shouldn't be a GM. If you think Clayton Richard would give the Cubs more than Dan Haren can through September, you'd be wrong. Additionally, he only has two quality starts.

Dan Haren has 14 QS in 21 starts. He averages 6+ innings per start. His WHIP is under 1.10. His K/BB is significantly better than Richard's. There is pretty much no reason you'd go with Richard over Haren.

Rest easy jimmy, his spot in the rotation is being taken by longtime vet Dan Haren who is now on his 8th team and in the twilight of his career. A guy like that should be right up your rooting interests alley.

Sounds good to me. No reason not to have a long reliever hanging around.

The Soriano experiment should of been over after his second outing.

Where in hell did you read that? All I'm saying is they shouldn't be playing games with a guy who has helped your ballclub. A little SP depth, nothing wrong with that.I have no issue with keeping Richard on the staff. I know he is not Dan Haren BUT Haren hasn't pitched for the Cubs yet. Let's hope he does good in his Wednesday start.

from ESPN:

MILWAUKEE -- Chicago Cubs pitcher Clayton Richard knew what was at stake on Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee. A bad outing would almost certainly find him looking for work again as the Cubs had already announced newcomer Dan Haren would take over the fifth starter’s role.

Richard had one more chance to show the Cubs -- and other teams -- he belongs in the majors.

“It’s good to contribute whenever you get the opportunity,” he said after earning the 4-3 victory over the Brewers.

He went six solid innings, working his way out of a few jams, and he got better as the game went along. He gave up just one run on five hits without issuing a walk. In turn, Richard wasn’t immediately designated for assignment as he’ll fly to Pittsburgh with the team on Sunday night before any decisions are made.

“I’ve been around long enough not to assume a role or a position,” Richard said. “Especially when a team is in it, they’re going to make adjustments and do whatever they can to improve. Hopefully they view me as a piece to the puzzle, but only time will tell.”

The Cubs will have to decide if they want to make Richard available to all 29 other teams or somehow keep him as insurance. He can’t be sent down to Triple-A without going through waivers. His value definitely increased some after Sunday.
“We’re discussing all the different things,” manager Joe Maddon said. “Clayton was outstanding. He kept getting better. He had better velocity. He was really good.”

Theo and his magic computer threw $2.25MM in the garbage when they signed Phil Coke. Then they gave Rafael Soriano pro-rated $4.1MM base salary (not sure if from MLB call-up or upon signing) and can add up to $4MM in incentives (based upon games finished and appearances).

That's around $4M down the toilet for busted relievers. $15 million if you consider Edwin Shithead a reliever.

$15 mill over a season for signing and cutting guys looking for pitchers, not even a drop in the bucket in the THE PLAN.

You know, like for a protracted rain delay occurring early in the game .......

Travis Wood.

Do you really need two left-handed long relievers?

When it's unclear which one is better, yes for a time.

If you can spend part of the year carrying superfluous catcher(s), you can hang on to an extra arm in the bullpen when you have a week's worth of games against the two teams directly ahead of you in the wildcard hunt.

I'd keep Richard over Soriano. Soriano has nothing left. Edwin Jackson bad.

I'd keep Wood over Richard. Does a solid job as the long reliever and can pinch run if desperate. No reason to experiment with that role in crunch time with what would be a marginal improvement at best.

Do you really need a computer to see that Soriano is old and bad?

Travis is going nowhere. They love him and his versatility.

Soriano and Richard are probably both gone eventually. I would keep Richard for now because Soriano is a fucking joke and Richard can be an additional long guy thus allowing Travis to be a short guy if need be. Ramirez will be back at some point unless they 60 day DL him an Wada has to be activated or dealt with as well.

Soriano should be on the DFA list to the funeral home. Glad to see Richards cleared waivers.

Cleared waivers? Reminds me of the Cubs getting rid of Larry Gura when he was a youngster because he couldn't break a pane of glass. I'm surprised nobody wanted him.
