Here's an interesting update on my issue. The former owner had a new AC unit installed by a company that also happens to do plumbing work. Called the company up and asked if they ever did any plumbing work on my house.

Turns out they rooted the bathtub in February 2015 and rooted the toilet in April 2015 and surprise surprise they found fucking tree roots in the line. This was not disclosed on our real estate forms. Think I'm going to be sending a letter to their closing attorney tomorrow....

Awesome. I will add my little story that I did not know about before moving to PA. My GF sold her house and in order to get the closing done the township required a occupancy permit over and above the general home inspection. Part of that was a "dye" test that makes sure water from the house gets to the street main. Hers failed due to roots in the pipe and had to repair it to close. So bad for her but a nice thing to have cleared up before you move into a new home.

Unless you have multiple lines that company found the same thing twice. Also, the diameter of the line and the end attachment are what will clear the roots. Having a plumber show up with a 3/8" rod and a spade tip wont do much of anything against roots. I helped one plumber with the thick (2"?) cable that comes in 10 foot segments and a claw tip. That was work, even more work when I rented a machine and did it myself the next time. Yes, this can rip apart damaged pipe if you try to push through too fast. Copper sulfate will keep roots (once the line is somewhat cleared) under control but it is extremely toxic and not readily available.
