No not white flight. Segregation and the acceptance of African Americans with regard to Segregation. That is an underreported aspect of it. When I say research it's not really that. I read books and in a few of the books I've read there is information which pertains to black enforcement of segregation in Chicago.

Its long said that blacks approached Daley #1 n said , give us the west side n you take south side ...he refused like a moron n the blacks took the west side n the lake front along with S.S. .

Numbnutz thought he could pack the lake poor people into high rises like sardines n forfeit a 4 block area .

Its not rocket Science ...the higher the property taxes = the better the schools=higher purchase price n resale ...they ain't just keeping minorities out ..they don't want you or me there either.

You're wrong. Blacks were forced into what was known as the black belt long before Daley ever became mayor. The housing projects that you speak of was created on land that already housed most of the city's black population anyway. They didn't have to move anywhere because they were already there.

The problems arose when middle class blacks realized that they could not move away from lower class blacks. The divisions were based upon race when it involved blacks and whites, and class when it involved middle and lower class blacks.

No one disputes the fact that some whites left when blacks arrived. No one who is rational anyway.

Throughout Chicago's history there is also a number of lawsuits against whites who tried to keep folks of color out of there neighborhoods. It was called redlining. Many of the very politicians that turned a blind eye toward it are still in power there.

And it is hardly surprising that blacks also participated in segregation. Change is something that human nature will always struggle with. Regardless of color or ethnicity.

Outside of Chicago, few cities fought integration initially more than Oak Park.

There was not just a few. There was a consistent pattern of it. Whenever a neighborhood became 5% to 10% African American white flight would occur.

The lawsuits were typically thrown out. The Supreme Court upheld restrictive covenants initially. By that they were not ruled unconstitutional. However they changed the laws so that would be difficult to enforce restrictive covenants. That is how they were eliminated.

I never said that there were a few.

And of course the suits were tossed. The white politicians appointed the judges that heard the lawsuits. The same political families that have been re-elected by blacks and whites for going on three generations now.

I can honestly say I have never heard about any of this, and yes I know I didn't grow up around here. I never even heard of something like this living in the south.

Some of the same tactics that were used in the South were also here. Firebombings predate the use of the covenants and they stopped the use of them once restrictive covenants became the standard method for segregating. One of the biggest offenders in the scheme to restrict is none other than that old bastion of liberalism, The University of Chicago. They fought long and hard to keep covenants in place.

I'm pretty sure it was Arkansas that just had their last segregated h.s. prom like 18 months ago.

You are right about that. It's def. marker based but what accounts for the level of division when there are similar levels of income.

Black ghettos in Chicago were created by politicians in Chicago. Is there any areas in Chicago that are predominantly white that you would consider ghetto? If so which ones?

I had a commodore 64 in about 84 or 85. Never took it out the box though. I thought I was riding the computer wave but ironically I think it may be the single biggest reason that I'm so fucked up when it comes to technology. I had no interest in learning about it then or now. I just asked my father to buy one because I wanted to be on some spoiled adolescent shit.

Chicago's property taxes are higher than mine.

Chicago's schools score less than mine.

Minorities are not kept out here.

Other than that, you fucking nailed it.

Specifically the area known as the black belt. It stretched from about 31st to 63rd street at its peak. It was as far east as Cottage Grove and as far west as State street. It was formed as a way of combating the migration of African Americans from the South.

The Creation of Public Housing is directly tied to this. The politicians of Chicago during this period devised a plan that became known as the racial composition rule. This rule stated that the residents of public housing must reflect the racial composition of the surrounding area. This rule was enforced by city hall and it was a way of keeping segregation going. This is just one of the ways. I will dig deeper shortly.

And boy did he give it to another community that got the "other" ethnic treatment when UIC was built. I kind of laugh every time they show old clips of Mrs. Scala.

It always amused me that the composition rule was originally enforced at Cabrini Green.

Not quite as much as watching the trouble they had tearing down Robert Taylor & Stateway Gardens. Those damn buildings were in fact, built to last 100s of years.

If you ever want to see the lengths that politicians will go to enforce segregation research the Gautreaux case. It was both a victory and a defeat for public housing.

The black ghetto was formed by the collective body of city hall. It was the entire council. There were no real dissenters during the 20's 30's and 40's

yes they were. I actually saw one of Lake park homes buildings go up in smoke. 43rd and Lake Park. The city put about a ton of dynamite in it and blew the motherfucker up. It took all of about 10 sec. for it to come tumbling down.
