Any thoughts? Thinking about taking my 8 year old out. But I know he will be BOARD out of his mind in about 2 minutes.

Opie Taylor looked like he was having such a good time!

Kids only get bored if they aren't catching anything ... Don't take em out in mid day when nothing is biting.. Go at 7 a.m. or 5 p.m. n bring some minnows or leaches .

Part of the process, they will learn. Young kids get bored with everything after what is usually a short period of time.

I prefer fishing with a pole but kids might be good to attract the bigger fish

I eat perch out of Lake Michigan , Bluegill n Crappie out of the cleaner lakes.

If you are going river fishing that's good for a kid...they love to reel , just cast a worm downstream n let the current take it..he can reel for 2 minutes on every retrieve.

Out of all the grandsons, I was the only one that met with my granfather's approval as a fisherman. He complained that my cousin Donnie liked to look at the bait and gramps flipped his lid once when my cousin David dropped the stringer. There were a lot of rules to fishing with my grandfather. You couldn't wear shorts (you might get sunburned). No pop or beer on the boat (water only, you might get dehydrated). Every rope/line had to be tied/rolled in a very specific way. God forbid you dropped something in the bottom of the boat. I learned those fucking rules and abided by them like a sacred code throughout my youth. Now, I break every single fucking one.

Kids can learn patience in school, not on the water.
You want them to have action and catch a lot of fish.
Size doesn't matter - small bluegills are fine.
Use light line, 4# or 6# monofilament. Don't use the rope that comes pre-spooled on kiddie poles.
Use tiny hooks. #8 hooks are the right size.
Use just one of the smallest split shot sinkers, no more.
Use the smallest of bobbers, not the jumbo red-and-white ones.
Good luck and have a great time!

Well, Sarley, I know you're one of our resident outdoors experts, but I think you'd agree that everyone always wants to have a lot of action and catch a lot of fish. It just doesn't work out that way. I think my grandfather's rules and style helped me learn the patience that's required to really enjoy fishing. The only thing better than sitting in a boat all day and catching nothing is sitting in a boat all day and catching something.

I have a friend who is an Eagle Scout and a serious outdoorsman and fisherman. But I hate fishing with him. He's miserable if we have a "bad day". Once, the fucker yelled at me for cutting up some cheese and salami because we hadn't done enough "work" yet. I don't like to fish as if it's a job.

"One of??" Who might the others be? Hell, I'm pretty sure I am the only "expert" here.
Yes, everyone wants to catch a lot of fish and there is no reason that this can't happen all of the time when fishing for small bluegills.
Hey, I don't go out looking for a lot of action from small fish, but if you want to keep a kid's head into the sport, that is the way to do it.

What about The Chaunce and Mac FM?

Anyway, I think part of fishing is getting skunked. And I don't remember getting too excited about catching tiny panfish and bullheads. I guess it depends on how old the kid is.

I agree that it's fun go after bluegills. One of my grandfather's favorite sayings was, "Pound for pound, the bluegill is the fightingest fish in the water."

I agree with a lot of what Sarley said . I think you'd be better off at an inland lake in the forest preserves.

Lb for lb ...best fight is Perch , Crappie n Small mouth .

My dad used to take me wading in the Fox River off of North Avenue (near a dam?) when I was a kid. One of the first times we went we must have caught 30-40 smallmouth bass in about two hours. One after the other. Never happened again but it's probably the only reason I can tolerate fishing now.

I would assume XBox has a version?

It was on Golf. No longer there. You can still see the busted up sign through the trees.

I am actually a bit uncomfortable torturing fish for my amusement. If I am attempting to catch something I will eat, I don't feel so bad. One time (of the like 10 times I've ever fished) I caught a smallmouth bass with a lure. damn thing swallowed the entire lure. killed the fish trying to get it out. I still feel bad about that.
