WHITING, Ind. (WLS) --
Gas prices are spiking across the Chicago area because of a problem at the BP refinery in Whiting, Ind.

The largest of BP's three crude oil distillation units, which distills about 240,000 barrels of oil per day, was shut down Saturday for unscheduled work. BP says there's no estimate when the repairs will be done.

Gas stations in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin get most of their fuel from the Whiting plant, which is the biggest refinery in the Midwest. It is currently operating at less than half of its 430,000 barrels-per-day capacity.

Those gas stations, which need to restock every couple of days, are now forced to source their fuel from refineries that are much farther away.

"Unfortunately, with the Whiting outage, unfortunately the consumer is going to pay at the pump," said Daniel Flynn, The Price Group.

Patrick DeHaan, an analyst for GasBuddy.com, said this is just the beginning.

"I've seen some stations jumping prices 30 cents, that is just a sign of what's to come. We could be looking at Chicago's average 25 to 50, maybe even 75 cents a gallon higher by this time next week," DeHaan said. "BP refinery supplies many thousands of stations throughout the entire Midwest, so this isn't just going to be BP, they supply gasoline to many stations that don't even fly the BP flag."

Motorists filling up Wednesday are certainly paying the price.

"We're looking at spending maybe 20 percent more today than we usually do, that's for sure," said Andreas Spitia, a motorist.

The price of gas is not expected to come back down until BP's broken equipment ion Whiting is fixed.

Before this incident it had been predicted that gas prices would continue to steadily decline and possibly be below $2.00/gallon by Christmas.

Am I completely daft to even consider that this problem at the refinery is bullshit and just an excuse to jack up prices by nearly a dollar a gallon for several months, or am I just mad about the dramatic increase in price?

Tad I am with ya, I can't believe this isn't bullshit. Gas prices in the Milwaukee area have gone up over $.50 and climbing. What a fucking joke.

Or it could be that actual maintenance needs to be done? If this refinery went up in smoke and a ball of fire things would be much, much worse. Believe me, BP would rather be refining the distillates and making money off them rather than having a hole blown through their production capacity.

Sure, that makes sense.

I don't know dick about oil refineries or what it takes to successfully maintain them. Is it unusual that it was shut down on Saturday and five days later they cannot provide an estimate of how long it will be shut down?

Most gas stations need to sell ~10 gallons of gas to make $1 in profit. How much profit the oil company makes is a different discussion. The markup that most gas stations have on gasoline and cigarettes is incredibly minimal.

It will be shut down until the price of crude oil starts to go back up, very convenient timing in all of this.

You might be surprised if you look up all the other things oil companies make money off of in a single barrel of crude.

every time gas prices go way down, this place closes! Yet where is OBAMA to protect us from this anti-competitive behavior?

I've worked in this shit hole many many times. There is maintenance thats going on year round. Scheduled shutdowns are usually in the fall but that changes all the time.

Crude is turned into various distillates and sold. Gasoline, diesel, kerosene etc. Then you have all the various mandated blends of gasoline, as well.

Not to mention asphalt.

Everything moves extremely slow, permit for this n that...literally got hundreds of guys sitting around in trailers playin cards n waiting to work... BP is not happy when production is halted . However .. They move cautiously n carefully n rightfully so .

Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Mayor Rahm Emanuel are demanding an explanation for the recent spike in gasoline prices from the Illinois Petroleum Council.

In a letter sent Monday, Madigan and Emanuel asked the council to spell out the factors that caused gasoline prices to increase and want to know when prices are expected to decline. They also asked what can be done to speed up a decline in prices and prevent future spikes under similar circumstances.

Midwest stations depend on BP's refinery in Whiting, Ind., and that facility, the biggest in the region, unexpectedly shut down the largest of its three crude distillation units for repairs on Aug. 8.

On Monday, retail gas prices in the Chicago metro area averaged $3.31 per gallon, about 15 cents lower than a week ago, but still 70 cents higher than the national average, according to AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

"We understand that many factors affect the price of a gallon of gasoline, and we are aware of the unplanned outage at the BP refinery in Whiting, Indiana. However, it is widely known that crude oil prices have been at all-time lows for quite some time," Madigan and Emanuel wrote.

Additionally, they said, the prices at which wholesalers and gas stations buy gasoline fell after an initial spike.

"It seems that retail prices are lagging spot prices as spot prices begin to normalize," they wrote.

Jim Watson, executive director of the Illinois Petroleum Council, said he's going to research the questions and will respond "as soon as I'm able to."

On Aug. 14, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette warned gas stations "against any attempt to take advantage of consumers by price gouging or price fixing."

The Whiting refinery can process 19 million gallons of refined fuel per day, or enough to run 430,000 cars, according to BP's website.

Gas in Chicago area is usually not far off the national average. We're paying $4 a gallon and folks in Mississippi are paying $2.

For those of you with E85 capability, the price was down to 58% of unleaded this weekend in DuPage. That might almost be worth purchasing at that discount.

The county-city tax is up to like 93cents a gallon. Us n SanFran are usually one two in getting raped.

That dizzy bitch should start any investigating with her daddy.
