It seems to me that there has been many a reference made to the board's glory days lately. I have partaken in such endeavors on a few occasions, but lately this line of thinking needs a little revision, if you will.

While there were certainly some legendary board moments during this period, there were also a number of clunkers. As a casual observer of the board scene during this era, I truly think that it is my civic duty as the self professed and proclaim long time guy, to point out some of the lower points of this board's glorious history.

1. There was far too much hand knobbing of host, in particular Dan McNeil. The constant peppering of McNeil to start Ask Mac threads or questions about the next time he was going fishing or to the cottage were positively nauseating. There was a constant need to kiss his ass simply because he posted on this board. It is noteworthy that his decline in popularity coincided with the reduction in posting rate. If you are one of the people that clamored for his return to the airwaves, or ever asked him to start an Ask Mac thread, or questioned him about return to cottage or fishing, them it's you I am referring to.

2. Goff. Goff also was whole lot more popular when he posted around here. There was a lot of Goff needs his own show talk when he actively posted. He became a stumbling bumbling baffoon that laughs too much and talks about race only once he stopped posting.
3. Same with drinky. His speech patterns have always been a problem yet not so much when he posted.

There were a number of people that posted during this pd that were quality posters and truly added to this board but there were also a number of assholes too.

I was as I say a casual observer during this pd and didn't really post or check often but I do remember the ALS thing to be a pervasive part of this board with respect to the hosts. I always got the feeling that they were playing people around here.

I have never been a "board was better 2 years ago" guy.

I like Dan Mc Neil's work for the past 20 or so years. I am unapologetic about that. I challenged him here when it was necessary and gave him praise when it was deserved.

Goff and drinky were fun posters. They had a good show together and probably earned a greater role. I still think they are both good on the radio.

I don't know why you would pick out either of these of examples of defining the board's character. The interactions with all three were relatively minor. If you want to talk about bad board eras, you could start the period where groups of posters began to give names to their cliques.

All that being said, I have enjoyed the board from its inception, from the guest era to today

I wanted to throw that in, but I'd written a rather long passage and thought it was time to chill. There was a rather incestuous vibe to that whole thing too.

I like posting and I don't want to give the impression that I do not. It's cool interacting with people on here.

This was really in reference to those that constantly believe that it is there duty to provide referendums and assessments on today's message board. There were a number of guys that I enjoyed reading from that period, as there are a number of people that I enjoy reading from this pd.

That period is always presented as the golden age of the board but there were things that were simply not all that golden.

Possibly to start as you say, a dopey thread. Seriously I'm not really providing an assessment or referendum on the state of the current board as much as I am providing an observation of the board of yesteryear. Sometimes there is an Utopian view held that is simply not valid.

Not quite, imo, but nonetheless, this thread makes me sad. I don't know if it was better but it was new to me and maybe all of us being the us of 10 years ago had something to do with it. People/posters have changed over the years too. Radio was better and I miss some of the posters that are no longer here.

I've mellowed. Everyone else seems 10x more prickly.

That's fine, except I was under the distinct impression - through your own words - you were starting said thread to denigrate the practice, which then obviously looks bizarre when juxtaposed with your doing essentially the same thing, albeit from a different angle.

This topic has been done to death with point and counterpoint about the pros and cons, but there's nobody in their right mind that thinks the board is flourishing in any way like it has a time or two in the past. That's not to say it's wretched right now and/or it'll never be "as good" again, but your overall take that reminiscing is entirely tainted by false memories is categorically wrong, and you'll be hard pressed to find anyone of any note who will agree with your posit.

I want as many posters at this site as possible no matter the irritation some may cause. I hate that during the MSFMB wars we lost guys not to the other board but to not posting at all. It sucks that others don't post simply because of disagreement in the administration of the board.

People and things have shelf lifes. Some used here as pure entertainment, some to be different than in real life, some to be what they truly are, some was just common interest, some where they got serious, some where they got crazy, some began to think they were more important than they were, some had a tough time with all that was just mentioned. That's going to cause friction at some point. It's what the French call it is the life.

That MSFMB thing really sticks with you. Are the final numbers or things that matched up with your interests that high or is it the principle that bugs you that much?

You are conflating the argument. I am not saying the board is necessarily better today. That's not my point. Wasn't some of the board attrition due to a mutiny of sorts. That was of their own choice and also speaks to their own unhappiness with the place.

I enjoyed reading their stuff also. I didn't even post that much then but I would check it every six months or so.

However the longing for the good old days obscures some of the issues that arose during that era. There have been newer posters that have contributed to the board and often times they are belittled or ridiculed simply because they are not part of some perverted board establishment. There I have provided an assessment for you.

The topic may have been done to death but I have never really spoken on it til now. Maybe I have missed my proverbial beat but I just thought I would throw it out there and see what people thought.

It was for me also but when it's your board you can do with it as you please. In some ways this board reflects the views of sports talk radio in general. There are some on here that only want posters that they can agree with. It's not difficult to ascertain who the individuals are that constitute membership in said group.
