I've discussed this with 2 different individuals who have owned gas stations.

They make almost nothing on gasoline...regardless of price. They make their money on all the other crap they sell. As mentioned already...spend 15 min people watching and you'll see a constant parade of people throwing money away on candy, drinks, smokes, and the voluntary tax papers.

Blunts are a huge seller ... You disagree ? If ya sell 50 a day (conservative) for a month - that's 1500 ... Make 33 cents apiece - 500 profit for one item..it adds up .

I don't begrudge Achmed a few pennies margin running a gas station, risking getting a shotgun in the face every night. You guys ever see America's Most Wanted? Half that video was from gas stations!

They aren't anywhere close to substantial (and even then substantial can mean a lot of things) unless wholesale gasoline prices are low, when those prices rise high enough those gas stations break even or lose money. It's a volume business. So this spike doesn't benefit the gas station nor does it benefit BP. So who does it benefit?

I get that the implication of this thread is to say that BP is screwing everyone over and all that but that theory doesn't really hold water.

Gas station profit margins on gasoline are razor thin,

Which is it?

Razor thin, not substantial or I'm talking out my ass?

I'd say razor thin all the way up to thin.

I don't think you're talking out of your rectum and anal sphincter but you're acting like gas stations make a killing and have fat margins on gasoline when the price of gasoline spikes. It's actually the opposite. Lower prices = fatter margins, higher prices = razor thin margins or taking a loss on gasoline.

Again, the implication and tone of this thread is that "It's Bullshit" that prices spike when 50% of a major refineries production goes offline and that it's all a grand conspiracy. It isn't.

SomeGuy wrote:
Gas station profit margins on gasoline are razor thin, when prices rise dramatically they even lose money on every gallon pumped.

Don't trip coming out of your backpedal.

It doesn't need to be a grand conspiracy for a major refinery to "go offline" during the summer driving season.

It's just a way for BP to put some cash in their pocket.

Not backpedaling, I'm correct, razor thin. You are wrong. Very simple. Even 312Player is on point, which should tell you something.

You're reaching, BP isn't going to put "extra cash" in their pocket. That isn't how it works. Not only have they lost 50% of their production capacity and the money that comes from that, they are also losing money on the other distillates that come from every barrel of oil. The longer the shutdown lasts the more money BP will lose and when gas prices rise those gas stations that purchase wholesale gasoline from the Whiting refinery will see margins go from razor thing to negative.

I'm not sure what you're confused about.

What are you actually arguing?

So, if I am reading this right Gasoline in Illinois is 3.51 ish?

I filled up this morning at 2.45 and people here are bitching that they raised our gas tax 25 cents this year.
That seems like a huge discrepancy from one area of the country to another. Usually we are about 25-30 cents cheaper, not a dollar.

So these gas stations paid a lower price for the gas before the refinery went down but upped their gas prices by $1 after the refinery went down and you're telling me they are losing money?

I just read an article about the refinery in illinois. That sorta explains the difference, but still bullshit.

Yes. That's exactly what he is saying.

Not to mention the fact that thousands of gallons of said gasoline that was purchased last week at the lower price, is currently being sold for $.99 a gallon more this week where I live.

I'm sure they'll drop just as drastically when Whiting gets their shit straightened out.

Depends on where in Illinois you are. Prices in Springfield area are often .40-.50 cents less than around Chicago. Just drive out of the collar counties and price drops a quarter.

On my way to returning a rental car in Orlando yesterday I noted the 2 gas stations closest to the airport were charging $4.59/gal. I opted to continue on down the road and came across a Wawa station less than a 1/4 mile away where gas was $2.22/gal. Clearly the closer stations were preying upon tourists - particularly foreign ones - who wouldn't know how bad they were getting ripped off.

Gas prices have gone from $2.42 to $3.19 in about two weeks out along 355. So that's about $7-8 a week extra on my commute that's not going to be spent inside the convenience store or on coffee or some ice cream.
