remember how cabrera started off this season looking skinny enough to the point that it hearkened memories of good ol florida-era migcab? well take a look at the guy now...

Image

i'm sure those ~6 weeks off with a calf problem did him a load of good in terms of keeping skinny migcab around.

that said, after a modest 2/7 start in the first 2 games last i checked he was 2/3 with a HR today.... and it's funny that broad brad assmus said that he'd prolly play friday, have saturday off, then play sunday (with the overall plan being to rest him up and etc) --- NOPE! he was in there all 3 games.

hitting .350 or thereabouts = he wants that damn batting title, i tell you what. i think if he plays just about every damn game remaining he might get enough ABs to be eligible for it, ergo he's in there doing his thing.

Original Miggy is the best hitter I have ever seen hit. 19 years old hitting oppo line drives hr in playoffs.

if it was luck, so be it, but i think he supported talent over the years.

Miggy looks like he'd hold his own in a prison fight.

Winning 2 would be pleasant. Don't know if it'll happen, I'm hoping for 5-2 on the homestand.

That would be great. Just keep winning series'. They can just go .500 the rest of the season and wind up winning 90 games on the season. but winning becomes a habit and it's one I hope they maintain and top that 90 win mark significantly.

Manny and Cabrera are probably the two guys I would point to as the best hitters of this generation. I really would love to say Frank, but his run just ended too quickly.

I would add Bonds to the list and most currently Trout and Pujols.

Thomas' career is almost exactly like Pujols'.

Pujols already has more HR's then Thomas and more hits. Thomas was the best Chicago hitter, but not MLB.

Thomas is easily as good as Pujols. When Pujols is done their OPS will be almost identical. The difference in counting stats can be attributed to when they played. The prime of Pujols'career took place in the steroids/live ball era.

And I'm not the world's biggest Frank fan. He was a fucking crybaby.

Pujols is still hitting 20+ HR's a year and driving in runs in the "dead ball era" and has never been accused of Steroids. Pujols came in toward the end of the live ball era and Thomas played his entire career in it. Thomas also played in a very HR friendly park. He hit 300 of his 500 HR's at home. Pujols has hit more home runs away 296 then he has at home 255.

Pujols will finish with far superior HR and RBI's. He has already passed Frank in 4 fewer seasons.

A lot of stuff you wrote here isn't right. Sox Park wasn't really hitter friendly during Thomas' prime. And there have always been whispers about Pujols and drugs. I'm not saying Frank didn't juice either. He's suspect like all of them. But I think the stupid numbers have more to do with whatever MLB did to the balls than what the players took anyway, and Pujols clearly benefitted from those years more than Thomas.

Anyway, I'm not sure what the argument is. When Pujols is done his batting average will be close to Frank's, his slugging will be close (maybe slightly higher) and his OBP will be lower as it is now. They're really similar players with similar career arcs.

What changed? Did they bring in/lower the fences with some of the renovations, or did changing the shape of the structure change the wind patterns?

They put the roof on.

That's interesting. I always thought of Comiskey Park as being as neutral as could be when it was designed, kind of like Anaheim Stadium was meant to be, and then around 2004 started hearing about what a hitter's park it was. I suppose that would be the roof messing with things, then, wouldn't it.

Except all those gold gloves Pujols won.

Gold gloves for first base. If there weren't a designated hitter, they would have given them to Thomas.

I think the roof coincides with when homers really started flying out of there.

I don't know that that's the case, but it's possible. Palmeiro won one without even playing there. And besides, first base defense means next to nothing. It seems to me that Cub fans put a lot of stock in it. If I had a dollar for every time I heard that Mark Grace saved Shawon Dunston forty errors a year... Just Saturday night Rizzo had to pick up a bouncing throw and Cub fans were oohing and ahhing like it was Willie catching Wertz. That's what a first baseman is supposed to do. Even guys that aren't so great pick up those balls the vast majority of the time.

According to this site, the posted outfield dimensions when it was built were 347-375-400-375-347. The renovations moved the bullpens and made it 330 and 335 down the lines, which helps the cause, too.

I liked the symmetry of the original New Comiskey. It needed renovations, sure, but I don't like the way they turned out. The dark green seats are kinda generic across baseball, and the FUNdamentals deck throws off the balance of everything.

Surprised, JORR missing on this one...The Sox moved eveything in......

Thats how they got the Bullpens and the Bullpen bar areas.

Someone once claimed that you needed a 15 foot wing span to reach over the fences.

Balls started flying out also because they lopped off 10 rows of seats in the upper deck.

Whatever the reason, the park wasn't particularly hitter friendly when Frank was plying his trade there. Certainly shortening the distance down the lines helps hitters. Also, I've heard that the roof has changed the wind patterns. I don't know. I just know it seems easier to hit one out since the roof went on.

1) 2001 - Bullpen move. Left field shortened 17 ft. Right field shortened 12 ft.
2) 2004 - Roof addition.

Both were a factor for Frank Thomas....especially 2004. That changed everything about the wind pattern on the field.
