They're shitty trophies that get thrown away anyway. You're not making some big social statement by lamenting them. Just another thing adults care more about than kids.

our little league gives t shirts with all the teammates names on it instead of awards to non championship game contenders

It seems like an excellent and preferred alternative

clearly you guys are not related to or friends with anyone who makes trophies for a living.... where do you think most of the "trophy guy"s money comes from? WHY DO YOU HATE THE FREE MARKET?!?!

i'm lifting that sentimentality from bomani jones, whose ESPNradio show was on for awhile last night while i was without power from 630pm-330am.... but still the point stands. i never thought of it that way cuz my gut feeling is the one that seems to be shared here, that the concept of participation trophies is an affront to a proper america....

...but bomabi had another point of view. he said that some of these kids outright suck at sports, and the ones who dont quit and flee the team and stick it out going out there every week to continue sucking while they no doubt KNOW they suck (and surely get made fun of for it, whether it's to their face or behind their back) deserve a little trophy for sticking it out. also they're going to look at that trophy and know they sucked, so in a sense that participation trophy will be a poignant reminder of their sucktitude because they only way they were gonna get a trophy was a participation trophy. now they have a perpetual reminder of how much they suck sitting somewhere around the house.

so in that sense the trophy might actually do more long term damage than not having one. plus bomani's older brother (47) had a participation trophy from back in the day so nicolas cage's hair is a bird and your argument is invalid!

Depends on the age. We started our kids in soccer at a young age and they loved the trophies/medals. However, after they reach a certain age, giving away trophies is silly and the kids know it.

I would have been one of those kids who sucked, except I was so sick with various bronchial issues from ages 6-9 that I played very little organized sports other than two years of weekend basketball in 4th and 5th grades. Our 4th grade team went 0-10 (we were the B team) and was made up of ever dumbass and every bad male athlete in our school at that grade.

Would I have liked a trophy? Maybe. But it would have gotten thrown out within two years.

Would I today really like an official photo from that? Absolutely. (And my mom would have saved it in her photo album, so I'd still have it.)

But it takes more work to photograph each kid, so they give out shitty little ribbons or trophies instead.

Sadly, many people are afraid for their children to experience failure. Many times we learn more from our failures & losses than we do from our successes & wins.

I think at any age it's a terrible idea unless there are no winners. My belief is if you make a child expect to get something for trying or just showing up it will hurt them later in life. The goal should always be to win. Failure is a great teachable moment.

He's absolutely right. You see what type of character a person has when they are struggling. It's easy to be positive when you are having success. Even creating an environment for your child to fail is a good idea when they are young.

Kids arent as dumb as people think. When they see that everyone gets a trophy, they realize its not special.

Here's adults reading into things that don't exist. Getting a participation trophy doesn't mean your kid didn't struggle and it doesn't mean they didn't lose. It just means they got a 50 cent trophy because their parents paid way too much for an activity and the organizers think they should get something back.

this is obviously being said by someone who doesnt have a lot of experience with "struggling" --- i personally think you see what type of character a person has when they're succeeding. i.e. someone with 8 figures in the bank who has "earned the right" to do whatever they want with the $$$.... once people have power and options to do whatever because they dont have to scrap by paycheck to paycheck in a desperate struggle to survive, thats when you find out what they're all about. if bill gates had 10 cents in his bank account and had to make rent next week and his job was deciding whether or not to lay him off, if he decided to sell some drugs to make $$$ to pay rent it could easily be filed under "doing what you gotta do" --- if he has 50-75bil in the bank and he decides to sell drugs then it could easily be filed under "doing what he wants to do"

personally i think when ppl are validated with enough $$$ to do whatver they want where they don't need for anything and dont have to put in work towards the endgame of being financially-setup for the rest of life, thats when you find out about people. from there give them arbitrary/power over people and see how they act when they're in a setup where nothing they do has any bearing on whether or not their financials are set for life and you're seeing the true nature of the beast, in my opinion of course.

saying stuff like "you find out everything about someone when they're struggling" is often times something successful people say to pass judgment on struggling people and to make themselves look better by default. bernie madoff wasn't ever struggling and we didnt find out what type of character he has, now did we? =D

You really have a hard time with this. The kid thinks the trophy is great because the parents usually tell them how great it is. Parents are the reason why they give out 10th place trophies. Parents are the reason why kids think showing up is great. Stop lying to your kids. When they aren't giving maximum effort TELL THEM. It won't destroy their confidence. Participation trophies hurt kids.

Thanks for agreeing with me, it has nothing to do with shitty trophies, just shitty parents.

The girls on my softball team who were first year players got trophies. Half of them nearly left them at field that day.

The girl who won player of the game in the playoffs and got a trophy was nearly in tears she was so excited.

In my experience, the kids I've coached and been around absolutely know that that participation trophies are not special.

This is a blog entry I really like about participation trophies:

Quote:
I'm going to tell you a secret about kids who got the medals that said "participant" on them: we know we weren't the best that day. Some were not the best any day. A whole lot of us were there anyway because we loved what we were doing, and we wanted to get better. Hell, I knew a 6 year old--this was over a decade ago, she's an adult now--who refused to take her first place trophy because she didn't even meet the requirements of her level, but all her competition fell attempting to do so. To us, the medal was an acknowledgement that we put in effort.

You know who got really intense about the trophies? Parents. My mother, at least, had it in her head that if a child is not succeeding at a sport, that child should not do that sport. It doesn't matter if they are enjoying themselves. What matters is that they are bringing home awards; if you can't possibly be the best, she said, why participate at all? It's like "because it's fun" never occurred to her, or many of the adults hanging around.

Participation awards convinced my mother that we were 'good enough' to continue in the sports of our choosing. We were succeeding! Look at the trophy! My first year competing tumbling, I was mediocre. Had I not come home from the first meet with a trophy, my mother would have yanked me out. Five months later I got 8th at State & qualified to Nationals. Six weeks after that I got 6th at Nationals. Many years after that I got 3rd at Nationals. But without the participation trophies, which to my parents meant success, I wouldn't have had the chance to get the real benefits from my chosen sport.

Things like strength. Things like perseverance. Things like learning to lose and win gracefully. Things like goal setting. Things like learning to cope with a bad day. Building frustration tolerance skills. In my case, building enough physical dexterity to move relatively gracefully through space. Friendships. Knowing how to compete with someone without them being The Enemy. Focus. Comfort in front of an audience. Poise. Working through fear.

It wasn't about the trophies, and I suspect it wasn't for most of my generation in the various activities we pursued. I had a lot of trophies. Some were even pretty impressive. The only one I was sad to have to leave when I moved?

It was the one that my coaches nominated me for & coaches & judges voted on. It wasn't for being a great athlete (I was pretty good. I wasn't Athlete of the Year material). It was for...sportsmanship, setting a good example for younger competitors, perseverance, grace in both victory and defeat.

It was for the things that mattered.

But I never would have gotten to that place without participation trophies because of the old idea that sports are only for the most gifted of athletes. Most of the people I did sports with? We did it because we liked it. Not for the trophy or medal. And we knew which trophies and medals really stood for something.

The goal at 6yrs old was to LEARN not win. They don't even know what the difference is between offense and defense at that age.

My brother won championship trophies every year he played little league, pony league and legion ball they adorned his dresser. I on the other hand got sportsmanship awards every year my teams weren't as good and neither was I., When I cleaned it the writing came off I threw it in the garbage.

All of us are where we are today because winning is the only thing that matters.

Teamwork, effort, socializing, commitment.....those are the hallmarks of a loser. No child should be recognized in any way for learning those traits.

this makes me think of West Ham United getting a token kinda-berth (they gotta win a qualifying round or 2) in this year's europa league because of some "fair play" award. totally token and most likely a waste in the end, but hey at least they got something out of it.... provided they dont lose a home/away set to the 4th best team in belgium or something.

participation tropies are only a vehicle. The participation trophy to a child usually is what their parent and peers value it to be.

We always got participation ribbons if we didn't get 1st 2nd or 3rd. I seem fine.

In classes in school when they'd hand out "hardest working", "best grades", "kindest person" awards, even the least deserving kid always got the "best attitude" award or some made up shlock.

a kid across the street growing up was generally shitty at every sport he attempted. his participation trophies were also scattered in with "MVP" trophies his parents would have MADE for him. They convinced him he was the best at everything.

He grew up to be tremendously shitty and a failure in adulthood. I don’t place the blame on that necessarily, its just an example of their overall parenting that churned out this cretin.
