The fact that anyone believes they are on any moral high ground to ANY other college/team is maddening. The good news is that people are finally starting to understand what has been a well known secret for decades. They could make anything virtually disappear as long as it happened in the right place.

Went down there 15 years ago....and was really unimpressed with the whole thing. Golden dome is like putting a diamond on the the face of a 15 year old with acne.

At least they haven't killed any student managers recently. SO they got that going for them.

What were you unimpressed with?

The campus is beautiful. The school is great. The football game day experience is top 10 in the nation. The student population is enthusiastic and generally pretty good people.

There is an undeniable douchiness to it all, sure but I'll take that over what Alabama (and places like it) is publicly pushing as its image.

I think a lot of it depends on how religious you are. I don't really care about the mass they do or the religious related things that are all around it. The stadium is average. The campus is nice, but so are most major universities.

That's why I asked Spaulding the question above. It definitely seems to be like a Mecca for Catholics, especially those from the Chicago area.

It doesn't come thru? I'm suppose to be. I've had an on again off again relationship with the church. I got really mad at them about 7 years ago and don't think I'll get back this time. I'd consider myself pretty spiritual, I pray, and follow most of the more (what I consider) important teachings in the Bible. As I age I fall more in line with Eastern religions, Hinduism appeals to me.

I followed religious traditions in high school. I was lucky enough to go on a school trip over Easter for a few weeks to Italy and Spain. When I walked in to St Peter's I felt cold, alone, and like I was surrounded by corruption. The only things I found moving in there were the the Pieta and shrine/tomb for St Peter. After Easter mass with the Pope, we went out, drank and met handsome Italian men. It would have made my grandmother proud and probably what she'd have done being the Catholic girl she was.

We were at ND for a hockey tournament but did the religious/touristy stuff too.

there are a lot of people from ND from the New England area and New York

There is no doubt it is a Catholic school.

I'd disagree that most major university campuses are nice and would forward that it is something that makes ND unique (not unique as in singular, but unusual).

You don't have to go to a religious service to consider a Saturday in the fall a top experience.

I say this not being a big ND guy

Sure, and subway alumni are huge in New York. But it's a quick road trip from Chicago. I'm pretty sure Chicago Catholics consider it "Chicago's Catholic University".

Empty would never be the word I'd use to describe it. It seems to me like there is a great feeling of community at the school. It certainly is a place that endears itself enough to the students that they closely identify with the place after leaving.

Boring is a word I'd use to describe it.

Besides the on campus religious stuff, I don't really know what would separate Notre Dame and a place like Illinois or Indiana. You also may be experiencing Notre Dame only in the fall, which is when all campuses look the best in my opinion.

What universities do you think weren't nice?

Illinois, was particularly unappealing. I went to Florida State a few weeks ago. There was nothing remarkable about it. I've heard compliments on Indiana but it left me with no particular feel.

Alternatively, I really like Michigan.

It sounds that the bankruptcy is within you and you are looking for the places to fill you.

I don't know how you could feel alone in St. Peter's. It is a world community.

I kind of remember going there to visit friends and thinking THIS is the academic representative of Illinois?
