Dawkins named the first backboard-breaking dunk "The Chocolate-Thunder-Flying, Robinzine-Crying, Teeth-Shaking, Glass-Breaking, Rump-Roasting, Bun-Toasting, Wham-Bam, Glass-Breaker-I-Am-Jam."[3]

He named other dunks as well: the Rim Wrecker, the Go-Rilla, the Look Out Below, the In-Your-Face Disgrace, the Cover Your Head, the Yo-Mama, the Spine-Chiller Supreme, and the Greyhound Special (for the rare occasions when he went coast to coast). The 76ers also kept a separate column on the stat sheet for Dawkins’s self-created nicknames: "Sir Slam", "Dr. Dunkenstein", and "Chocolate Thunder."

I was always a Dr. J fan....so a Sixers fan by extension. Darryl was very good at times, but they could not get over the top w/ him until they brought in Malone.

My memory of Dawkins was that he came straight out of high school into the NBA. As a 'yout"...I was awed by that. Malone was also a guy who went from HS to NBA.

Philly was my team during that era. They couldn't get past both Boston and LA. Some years they'd beat Boston but they'd end up losing in the Finals. Once they acquired Moses it was over, at least for a year anyway.

They were set up to be good in the post Doc era but they made two of the stupidest trades in history. Traded Moses and the #1 pick Brad Daugherty in the same summer. Moses to Washington and the #1 pick to Cleveland. Those trades were absolute busts for them. They have not been the same since.

It was so awesome back then, and yes I know I sound old. Loved coming home from church as a yute and sitting down to watch Bird and the Celtics play at the old Garden. Still love watching those games on NBATV, my son laughs his ass off at the shorts they wore.

I was 7 in 80. I remember the games being on tape delay. I would stay up to watch the games. Even the all star games were competitive. Those guys really laid it on the line. Seattle and Milwaukee were always two of my sleeper teams. Once Sikma was traded to Milwaukee I really began to pay attention to them. They were always good but the NBA was loaded. It was difficult for really good teams to get past the second round. That's how tough it was.

That was his nickname. It was one of the all time great NBA nicknames. Darrell Griffith came out of Louisville in 1980 I believe. He may have stolen his nickname from Dawkins.

I had that poster on my wall next to the one of Walter running up his hill and the classic-style Ryno poster with the white boarder and the name across the top.

I met her a few yrs after he'd committed suicide. I'd never heard of her brother but the older guys in the neighborhood were familiar with him. They relayed the story about the dunk and his suicide. It was just a sad tale all the way around.
