Looks like Ryno is coming back to the Cubs as an ambassador, replacing Ernie.

Nice. Good to see him back where he belongs. Well done, Tom Ricketts.

If you mean 'not managing a pro MLB club', then yes he's back where he belongs.

Are there any MLB clubs that aren't considered professional?

Sandberg might be the only, if not one of very few guys who retired and gave money back.....if you refer to his coaching time, he left before he was fired. Taking a team rebuilding to anything is a tough job in baseball, especially with a bunch of overpaid vets, who will be traded. Rollins, Utley, Howard....

Sandberg couldnt have done more than was asked of they guy for every level of his Cubs career from coaching to playing.

Bringing him back is perfect and is the right thing to do.

Special Assistant / Amabassador.

Essentially same thing Dempster does, but people will want to meet Sandberg.

Oh so you're saying he quit on his team. Twice. Yeah that's what I was saying too.

he came out of retirement to try and play, decided he couldnt. I guess he could have retired in his mind like Lance Briggs and taken the salary for 2-3 more years and gone to tend to his other businesses?

I look at it as a guy who could have taken the money, but didnt. Knew he wasnt worth it and didnt take the cash. When Job Lester is 36 and the Cubs are paying him $25 mill, I can promise you he isnt going to retire and not take the final year of his deal.

Zambrano didnt give back his final $19 M...and on and on.

You want to look at him as a quitter, I look at it as being the most honest guy in baseball.

Never thought he should be a manager, DT. He will do some great things as a Cubs Ambassador. He's popular and very likable - A big hit with the fans for sure.

I could create a list of guys I wish "QUIT" and didnt take the Money. I dont care if they take the money or not, but its handcuffs teams. The Sox are paying Danks $20 mill! Imagine if they didnt need to pay him and he just retired and then didnt take the money....but he needs it, in a big lawsuit still.

He built every team that he managed into a winner, except for the Phillies. The best managers in the game couldnt win with that garbage team. With McFAIL returning to the Phillies, Ryno stepped down rather that continuing to hang around waiting for Andy to fire him.

It seems that the teams that have an Ambassador Program are reaping many benefits - as well as the former stars that they are hire on.

It's a total win-win for each party. The Ambassador gets a great paycheck to show up in a jersey, smile, shake hands, sign autographs and pose for pics. A big attraction for diehard fans of said team.

More importantly, the franchise gets a great draw to bank on for their events, games and best of all charities and non profit programs.

As far as his manager capabilities, my comment was made in light of Joe Maddon currently being the manager on the North Side. Admittedly, I am not familiar with his other managing endeavors in the minor leagues or with the Phillies.

Not when they still have a NO CUT contract. They quit, or retire when a contract is done.
