Probably wasn't the best idea for them to skip the starts of some of these guys.

Would that it were so that we can point to this series as the beginning of the end of "the Cardinal Way" being anything of value for some time to come.

Heard a promo this morning for Len's weekly interview/circlejerk with Lin Brehmer. The interview they featured in the promo was Len being all smarmy about how he talked about a no-hitter in progress without the world ending, then Lin saying "do people understand that your job as an announcer is to be entertaining and tell people what's happening?" In other words, a common Dan Bernstein talking point. Not even other CBS stations are safe from the Bernstein Tree. It's uncanny.

Yeah, extra time off may give a guy a little more velocity back on the fastball, but it can leave him less than sharp with their control and that certainly has been the case in these first 2 games. Now lets get through 5 and make sure the game is official.

I don't think it was the extra time off. Cardinals look like a team that thought they could just show up and beat the Cubs at home.

Is it crazy to think Baez might be a better SS (defensively speaking) than Russell?

While it's never fun to get pummeled by your division rivals 15-0 in the first 1.5 games of a series at home, it seems like Magic Mike is treating this part of the schedule like an extended rehab/ playoff roster tryout.

Wacha, Martinez, and Lynn have been skipping starts since late August, and the last two games will tell you it's hard for these pitchers to keep their edge. Our best lineup is something like Carpenter-Heyward-Peralta-Grichuk-Wong-Molina-Holliday-1B. Right now it seems like the spring training B game out there.

Enjoy the surge Cub fans... we'll see you in the NLDS unless the Jolly Jolly Roger have something to say about it. It's a shame that we likely won't see two Central teams in the NLCS (almost no scenario where this is likely).

Calm down. You need to beat the Pirates in the wild card game first.

he may have a stronger arm and a bit more range even. But I think Russell is more steady and is a guy who will win Gold Gloves at the position. I like the idea of Baez at 3rd a bit more to see how he can fare over there. Bryant does a good job at 3rd and improved his fielding noticeably. But They may need to find a place to put Baez if his bat continues to produce, just as they had to do with Schwarber. If that means Bryant plays RF for now.....okay.

Hmm. Could be that. Do you think they've played a,little above their heads though?

I figure they're due for a slight correction

I'll never fault a fan for enthusiasm but that's a little ridiculous. I'll be happy to see Cole and Arrieta burned in the playoff game.

Yes. I was thinking the same thing. Don't like the guy but he's been a pro about it. Didn't think he had it in him.

He doesn't even know he's been moved. He just waits for someone to hand him a bat

There's no question the Cardinals have. Our strand rate has been absurd. Kind of like a couple years ago when our BABIP with RISP was absurd. I'm not saying it's just luck, but it's fluky as hell and no rational observer should expect any of that will carry over to the playoff crapshoot.

162 is one thing, but once in the postseason weird shit happens. There is vaery little difference relative to other sports, between a 100 win team and a 90 win team. Personally I think the Cardinals are better at things like stealing signs and game-planning for particular pitchers (see our odd "domination" of Kershaw in the playoffs) but that doesn't really guarantee playoff success. The narratives will amplify things like Denkinger in '85 and Bartman, but there is a lot of dumb luck. The beauty of baseball, in my opinion.

He was talking up Mets being one of those "don't want to see them in post season" rotations very early on.

I think the dominant staff built for short series rarely works out. Pitching wins in playoffs but its usually some guys pitching over their heads, not the super rotations

But Mets fixed their offense with the quickness and they might be the exception
