In spite of Serena running roughshod over everyone, women's tennis has become more interesting than the men's game, which is nothing but power-baseline meatball surgery. It's the same sort of artlessness that you see in the modern NBA and NHL where everyone is obviously really good and better than ever but rarely doing anything but executing.

Venus showed that you can still get inside Serena's head. It will be interesting how Serena proceeds here. If the crowd goes against her, she melts down.

Martina Hingis--who was pretty much chased off tour by the Williams sisters power games, plus her yayo habit--is back playing doubles. In the semis for women's and mixed doubles today:

As much as it pains me to say this, she may benefit from a breast reduction. Simona Halep's career has taken off since she deflated her beauteous orbs, though she lost in straight sets in the semis.

A young me was lusting over Martina Hingis while the rest of the world was lusting over Anna Kournikova, but then I've always rooted for villains.

is Kournikova the one who rode in the Red Wings Stanley Cup parade with Sergei Federov when she was still jailbait, even by Detroit/Michigan's lax 16 year old standard.

Serena lost in the semis to an unseeded 33 year old Italian chick.

Kournikova born June 7, 1981

Anna K sat next to Federov in the backseat of a convertible during the Red Wings Stanley Cup parade on June 10, 1997

Federov was 28 at the time.

Not sure why she'd retire now. She's only 4 months away from the Aussie Open, same surface. If she's playing this well, no reason not to see how she'd do down under before retiring before the
impossible French clay or Wimbledon's serve and volley grass. McEnroe thinks she might reconsider and play next season.

She's actually more of a double's player. Only played like 30 singles matches the whole season. She should definitely retire from singles unless a tourney is going to throw some cash her way to show up.

Yeah, she's 33. In addition to the prize money she just won, she'll likely be some sort of national hero in Italy and rake in some sponsorship dollars, even without playing another pro tennis match.

Also, could be time for the mommy-track.
