The 90s Bulls would be far ahead any Cubs title. The Bulls took the NBA to heights it has never seen or likely will ever see again.

The Cubs would fall well behind the 85 Bears, the 90s Bulls, and somewhere ahead of the current Hawks dynasty but closer to that then either of the other truly defining sports teams of the city.

The Cubs winning would be the biggest thing in sports, not just Chicago.

85 Bears are safe at the top but the Cubs would be right there. Then after that the Bulls, then waaaay, waaaay down there are the Hawks and Sox.


You waaaaay overrate the Bulls titles. Jerry Reinsdorf pretty much spoke for Chicago with the "Id trade all 6 titles for a World Series"

The fact that the NBA peaked at the time doesnt really support the argument. Nobody cares about the state of the game when the title was won.

For a short time it would be just like the Hawks are a big story for a while when they win one.
The NBA still hasn't seen an era of popularity like that and the Bulls are considered one of, if not the greatest team in NBA history and they had the greatest player in NBA history.

The story on the Cubs will be the same as the Red Sox. It was a really good team that finally ended a long period of losing. I'm not even sure the Red Sox were/are the biggest Boston sports story of the last 15 years and obviously the Red Sox are more important to baseball than the Cubs are.

To put it in perspective, 72 million people watched Jordan's last game as a Bull. 28.8 million watched the Red Sox win the World Series in 2004.

The NBA during the Jordan era was extremely popular, especially on an international level. The Dream Team was the 90s version of the Beatles. They were basically responsible for the European influx of talent over the past two decades. The Bulls winning was always a big deal. The Cubs winning one might be a bigger deal locally, but the 90s Bulls transcended the basic popularity of basketball.

Why are the Red Sox more important? Actually they probably arent. Yankees, Cubs, Dodgers, then probably Red Sox. Its arguable, but certainly not obvious.

And were talking locally, Leash. The conversation began as "biggest thing in this city"

Like it or not, most people in Chicago are way bigger fans of their baseball team than the Bulls. That's not even taking into account the title drought.

You forgot the Cardinals who have a huge fanbase handed down from when they were the southernmost and westernmost franchise. Even the Cub manager is a Cardinal fan.

Anyway, the Cubs winning the World Series would be the biggest national sports story unless Aaron Rodgers decided to be The Bachelorette.

I'm sure you'll give me 100 reasons why it isn't true but nationally I think the Red Sox are considered more important, and Boston is a huge baseball city with only one team.

Now that may be true. The point is that the Jordan Bulls were a transcendent team that goes down as one of the all time great teams in sports history. To say that would not even be close to a Cubs championship is just stupid.
I'm a bigger Bears fan than a Bulls fan, but I understand just how important and special the 90s Bulls were.

Don't take it to extremes. The Cubs winning the World Series would be a big national story. The World Series winner normally is.

Isn't the 2004 Red Sox easily the closest parallel? Locally it would be a huge deal for many years, but nationally it would be forgotten within weeks.

Forget about the Bulls. It was fun but the NBA is the casual fan's sport. You have diehards like Douchebag and FavreFan sprinkled in here and there but the NBA doesn't seem to have as many diehard fans as the MLB, NFL and NHL does.

Forget about the Hawks. I don't think it's just a fling, this is a city that loves hockey that got completely alienated by the Hawks unlike any other franchise in sports has ever seen. Hawks fandom is here to stay but hockey ranks 4th in this city and country. Even diehards such as myself recognize it and don't argue it.

Forget about the Bears. Yea, I said it. It has it's share of diehards and casuals but the main reason everyone loves the Bears so much is because "OMG FOOTBALL!!!!" more than an actual emotional connection with the team. I think most Bears fans love football more than they love the Bears.

Forget about the Sox. 2005 appeared to be a huge deal and the pure joy and elation I saw from my Sox friends was nice but it has always appeared to me that Sox fandom is more about telling me how much I suck for being a Cubs fan than actually rooting for their team and I'm not even talking about CSFMB. The Cubs are the #1 baseball team in this city so there is no way 2005 would mean as much as a Cubs championship.

The Cubs are truly the #1 team in Chicago at it's heart. No matter how abusive they have been to those who love them, as soon as it looks like they've changed for the better, we all welcome them back with open arms. There truly is an emotional connection with the team. When the Bears lost the Super Bowl in 06, everyone just appeared to move on. When the Cubs lost in 03, 07, 08 it added another scar on our heart. That right there is the difference to me. There's just way more feelings involved with the Cubs and if they ever manage to end this awful streak, the city might explode. Bros and grannies hugging each other crying and such.

Yea, I know you guys like football and all, but no, it didnt go away. Espn was all Red Sox for a like a year, HBO was making specials, it was a big deal for far longer than weeks (and way more than any Pats title, btw)

I don't think it's any more forgotten than most championship teams. The '85 Bears are all over here in Chicago (and probably will be until they die), but I don't think they're more remembered nationally than the '90 49ers or the '99 Broncos. Players seem to be remembered more than teams- Jordan, Magic, Montana, Yaz.

The reality is that you guys will be sitting in Yakzies wearing your Game #163 participant t shirts while watching the Blue Jays v. Mets in the world series. Most of those t shirts will be ill fitting, I might add.
