I guess we remember it differently and won't agree. I think you're being naive though if you're not acknowledging how quickly the Cubs winning it all will be forgotten nationally, considering how quickly we move on from everything in 2015. I already said it would be a huge deal locally for years.

after waiting 100 years purgatory you finally get to St. Peter's desk.

Sorry chump. I saw you lived in Tinley Park and assumed you were a Sox fan.

Trap door opens.

A lot of people like football and that is relevant.

Are you saying the Red Sox have been bigger than the Patriots in the past 15 years?

In case you haven't noticed, football is pretty popular.

Ending the drought = good story. Being an all time great dynasty = all time great story.

The Cubs winning the World Series would be the biggest sports championship in Chicago history, in my opinion.

Forget about the Bulls. It was fun but the NBA is the casual fan's sport. You have diehards like Douchebag and FavreFan sprinkled in here and there but the NBA doesn't seem to have as many diehard fans as the MLB, NFL and NHL does.

Forget about the Hawks. I don't think it's just a fling, this is a city that loves hockey that got completely alienated by the Hawks unlike any other franchise in sports has ever seen. Hawks fandom is here to stay but hockey ranks 4th in this city and country. Even diehards such as myself recognize it and don't argue it.

Forget about the Bears. Yea, I said it. It has it's share of diehards and casuals but the main reason everyone loves the Bears so much is because "OMG FOOTBALL!!!!" more than an actual emotional connection with the team. I think most Bears fans love football more than they love the Bears.

Forget about the Sox. 2005 appeared to be a huge deal and the pure joy and elation I saw from my Sox friends was nice but it has always appeared to me that Sox fandom is more about telling me how much I suck for being a Cubs fan than actually rooting for their team and I'm not even talking about CSFMB. The Cubs are the #1 baseball team in this city so there is no way 2005 would mean as much as a Cubs championship.

The Cubs are truly the #1 team in Chicago at it's heart. No matter how abusive they have been to those who love them, as soon as it looks like they've changed for the better, we all welcome them back with open arms. There truly is an emotional connection with the team. When the Bears lost the Super Bowl in 06, everyone just appeared to move on. When the Cubs lost in 03, 07, 08 it added another scar on our heart. That right there is the difference to me. There's just way more feelings involved with the Cubs and if they ever manage to end this awful streak, the city might explode. Bros and grannies hugging each other crying and such.

My opinion.

Marketing experts have repeatedly found the Bears to be the most followed team in the city for decades.

Without the slightest doubt. At the Patriots victory parades the crowd chants "YANKEES SUCK!!". Did you miss that?

It still doesn't change what the 90s Bulls were. It was far bigger than just being the best team for a year. It was likely the best team in the sports history.

Well, Im talking relative to other titles.

The 04 Red Sox lasted well beyond any other Championship team in a long time.

Ditka hosted SNL. Jordan did as well. Just to put this discussion into perspective.

Absolutely without question the Red Sox dwarf the Patriots in Boston. Celtics are closer.

That's a real Chicagocentric viewpoint. I'm sure no one in LA or Boston feels that way.

Again, were talking locally. On a Global level the Bulls are a bigger deal than even the 85 Bears.

I think it would probably have to be "COLTS SUCK" or "MANNING SUCKS", but the point is, at the Red Sox victory parades no one is thinking about football.

you're making a national argument when it was originally stated as a Chicago-specific thing. Nothing's going to touch the Bears but the Cubs would certainly surpass the Bulls in terms of largess in Chicago. I had season tickets to the Bulls and Cubs. Nothing was bigger than 2003, and they didn't even get to the WS. Nationally you are right on the Bulls.

There is a strong case to be made for it especially the 72 win team.

On a global level Lionel Messi stubbing his toe is bigger than Michael Jordan's best game.

Among guys who know basketball the first threepeat team is widely considered superior to the second.

Soccer is off the board for this discussion

Jordan himself, not as much the championships, was huge

Please provide me any evidence that the Bulls weren't huge in Chicago in the 90s.

This is the problem. I provide actual data showing just how big the Bulls were and you say "Well, locally they weren't that big" without really providing any justification. Why would the interest in Chicago not be just as large?

Bad hyperbole JORR. Jordan is largely responsible for basketball becoming the second most popular sport globally. Soccer is still first, but you can make an argument that Michael Jordan is still the most famous person on the planet.

I remember in my yout, whenever a Chicago team did well and was making some kind of playoff push, they suddenly had a candy bar in their honor for a couple of months. I remember going to Tarpey's to buy a white sox bar. I can still remember the packaging being like the front of the sox jersey.

That's if you're comparing the three peats collectively. 1996 was probably the best Bulls team. 1998 was easily the worst.

Yeah, no one cared about Phil Jackson, or Scottie Pippen, or Dennis Rodman...

The '86 Celtics are the only other team with a legit claim to it. I don't care what fans in LA think, they don't have a team better than the '86 Celtics or '96 Bulls.

Why are you laughing at a notion that you just said "may be true" a few posts ago? (chicago people are bigger fans of baseball teams than Bulls)

And, as far as providing data for how big a Cubs title was, well...I dont really have access to that future event.

It was more a Jordan thing than a Bulls thing on a global level from everything Ive ever read about it.

Anyone who minimizes the local impact of Bulls championship run didn't live through that time. Bars across the city were packed every night for two months straight. It was like an annual carnival.

Again, I think that's a real Chicagocentric viewpoint. Not that Jordan wasn't/isn't huge worldwide, but when the Dream Team was in France, people at the airport were screaming "Magique! Magique!"
