that is a national argument, not a Chicago specific argument.

Absolutely was a big deal but its all relative. The Bulls run is very similar to the Hawks now. (Bandwagon, t shirts, bars packed, people watching who arent fans of the sport )

I think the Cubs would be even bigger and closer to a Bears 85 thing, but who cares anyway?

Again, I think that's a real Chicagocentric viewpoint. Not that Jordan wasn't/isn't huge worldwide, but when the Dream Team was in France, people at the airport were screaming "Magique! Magique!"

Yes and Barkley was hugely popular too. But it's not Chicagocentric at all to say that was Jordan's team. Why do you think Isaiah wasn't there?

I'm laughing because you are making things up. There is no reason to believe that the Bulls who were huge nationally were not equally huge in Chicago.

It makes no difference if the Cubs/Sox are more popular today. The 90s Bulls were huge. I want you to provide some sort of data to show that the Bulls weren't massive locally just like they were nationally.

That's true. And Magic was really finished at that time. I'm just saying, there is no Jordan without Bird and Magic. Those guys popularized the NBA. Before they got there the Finals were on tape delay. And Magic is as revered as Jordan everywhere basketball is played. Jordan has the power of Nike behind him and that can't be underestimated. He has managed his brand obsessively. That's why he comes to Chicago to testify against a bankrupt company.

Do you disagree?

I have no reason to believe that those massive ratings did not also deliver massive ratings in Chicago. It wouldn't make sense that those historic ratings happened but the hometown didn't also see historic ratings.

I'll wait on your counter evidence though.

85 Bears championship run was pretty unique because it lasted most of the year (as evidenced by the Shuffle). The championship was a foregone conclusion that was celebrated for months in advance.

You, like so many Cubs fans, find it shocking and offensive that there are people out there who are not Cubs fans.

Yes. Of course.

The fact that they didn't stick around after they broke up the team doesn't change what happened when they were together.

I care more about the Bears today than I care about the Bulls. It doesn't change how amazing and enjoyable the 90s Bulls were.

This thread reminds me how much it sucked when a 14 year old FF realzed the Bulls were not gonna win the title every year for the rest of history.

It ruined me on the NBA for a long time. I knew it would never be better than that.

Watching Lebron win a title was the only real thing that got me excited since Jordan left the Bulls, but then he kind of ruined that whole thing.

I disagree with you. I just think the majority of Chicago people care more about their baseball teams and because of that the title is a bigger deal.

the cubs playing and winning in the world series will be the most most watched championship in chicago history.

you will have 95% of chicago intently tuned in rooting for the cub and then the other 5% of chicago/sox fans watching intently rooting against the cub.

I don't think it was a foregone conclusion. At least I don't remember it that way. Sure, in retrospect that team was so fucking good nobody was going to beat them. But at the time, There hadn't been a championship in Chicago for 22 years. I don't think anyone was confident at the time.

I wouldn't count on that. World Series gets abysmal TV ratings. If baseball is still the most popular sport in the country, it's largely with the dont-own-a-TV demographic.

Not only was it the height of confidence (arrogance?) to film the Shuffle months before the Super Bowl victory, but they did it right AFTER the loss to Miami. You gotta give them credit...they backed it up.

I guess if the World Series games aren't played on a Thursday, Sunday, or Monday the ratings will be ok.

Assuming the Bears weren't a similar level of dominance the Bulls title would mean more.

If we are talking about the 2015 Bulls vs. the 2015 Cubs/Sox then yes.

Some teams are so great that they reach another level. In my opinion, the Bulls are one of those teams.

Let me put it another way. If I could somehow relive the 2005 White Sox or the 90s Bulls or the 2017 Bears Super Bowl champs I would choose the 90s Bulls without question.

I call bullshit on anyone born after 1973. you were 12 when the Bears won. Even that is youngish. You have no idea how this town was turned upside down for the Bears.

Michael Jordan was ranked the greatest athlete of the 20th Century by an outfit that is constantly criticized for their East Coast bias. You can certainly debate the ranking, but you can't debate his popularity. Of course he stood on the shoulders of others, but that's true of anyone ever. Are we criticizing Jordan because he didn't invent basketball?

I know a lot of older people didn't like Jordan because he was from a younger generation and his career is largely responsible for the hyperbole-ridden, ESPN-like coverage of athletes and that he made tennis shoes mainstream and that a lot of the love for him was due to his showmanship, but these are all reasons that prove how popular he was, not how popular he wasn't.

Regarding the Cubs winning a WS, the "impact" it has seems like semantics to me. Anytime a favorite team wins a title, it's a big deal. I don't know what some people mean when they say that championships were quickly "forgotten." Are people supposed to wear their Cubs pajamas to work for a year after they win?
