I was born around that time. Everything was Bears for months. Even my grandma sat down and watched games with me. The wall to wall Bears coverage of today is a remnant of what happened in 85.

I don't think it was a foregone conclusion. At least I don't remember it that way. Sure, in retrospect that team was so fucking good nobody was going to beat them. But at the time, There hadn't been a championship in Chicago for 22 years. I don't think anyone was confident at the time.

I put my head in the oven after the Pats scored first.

 Yeah, that's kind of how I remember it. Oh fuck! Here we go. They're not as good as we thought.

It's not complicated. It just means, nationally, non-Cub fans won't give a shit by December. Obviously it will be remembered and celebrated for years locally, as I said.

Maybe ESPN put up that kind of garbage, but I'd have had to have put Ali and possibly Jesse Owens & Jim Thorpe above Jordan.

Yes exactly, plus didn't Mike Richardson [Edit: Leslie Frazier] blow his knee out within the first 5 minutes of the game? I remember thinking that they're really fucked now.

by the way, the IF in the thread title shows the chink (insert Steve, Scooter, chas joke) in Cub fan armor. All that braggadocio is to mask the fear that It's Not Gonna Happen

Not really joking, but I thought it was Secretariat. Maybe he was 2nd or 3rd.

It was Frazier, wasn't it? The real lockdown corner. But I don't remember when it happened in the game.

I believe it was Jordan. The whole thing was dumb - it was just a popularity contest. There was really no criteria. I think Ali was 2 or 3 after Ruth.

Secretariat was in the Top 30. If we're talking about the true definition of "athlete," I'm pretty sure a thoroughbred race horse should beat out everyone.

You couldn't escape Bears talk anywhere in this city or in any demographic.

Any city's team that didn't routinely sell out, didn't bother with the gimmicks to avoid blackouts. Virtually every other market wanted to watch the Bears as much as possible. In Atlanta I know I saw at least 10 games. IIRC, John Madden (when he was at his best) actually lived here for weeks at a time.

Boy did the McCaskeys & Ditka blow that quick.

No, Jim Thorpe was widely regarded as the best athlete of the first half century in 1950. (Time/Life magazines?)

Because that's what happens when you make such a list with no actual criteria.

Frazier, on a punt return in the 1st Quarter iirc. :(

Mike Richardson had problems with the blow & was MIA within 2-3 years.

Kind of like starting a circle jerk party celebrating the apparently inevitable title for one of the losing-ist franchises and fanbases in history. Even one whose club is just in third place in their division.

Come on, you just KNOW that was just a weak offering trying to suppress the inevitable Cubbie karma/loss. We know what he, nay, what you all want so desperately want to really say.

I wish all you Cubbie fans would grow some stones, own up to it. You all now are starting to believe it, but the cowardice built after generations of Cubbie futility has you all on the precipice of being actual sports fans, and still won't allow you to say it. If for no other reason, you all fear the absolute hazing you're all going to get when your season ends at the conclusion of game 163.

Weak sisters, the lot of you.

They will have as good a chance as all the teams in the playoffs, imo
