I don't think it was a foregone conclusion. At least I don't remember it that way. Sure, in retrospect that team was so fucking good nobody was going to beat them. But at the time, There hadn't been a championship in Chicago for 22 years. I don't think anyone was confident at the time.

Marino beat them and would have done it again if they would have played in SB. Just did not happen.

everything had to fall perfectly in line for him to do it the first time

that is a national argument, not a Chicago specific argument.
I have no reason to believe that those massive ratings did not also deliver massive ratings in Chicago. It wouldn't make sense that those historic ratings happened but the hometown didn't also see historic ratings.

I'll wait on your counter evidence though.

I tried. Will keep trying. I think it's possible the Cubs could get just as historic ratings as the Bulls. Remember the influence nationally too of WGN. World Series ratings for the Cubs could break all records.

If they had played Miami 100 more times, maybe Miami wins two of them.

Let me point out once again that in Jordans last game, they got triple the amount of viewers that the 2004 Red Sox did when they "ended the curse".

It's not really about the Cubs. It's about how massive the 90s Bulls were. There is no reason to think that it didn't also resonate in the same magnitude in Chicago.

We have an answer!

http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/towerticker/2010/06/blackhawks-cup-win-vs-other-chicago-titles-in-tv-ratings.html

Quote:
63.1 household rating for the Bears' 1986 Super Bowl XX victory over the New England Patriots on WMAQ- Ch. 5.

53.1 household rating for the Bulls' 1997 NBA title clincher against the Utah Jazz on WMAQ-Ch. 5.

52.1 household rating for Bulls 1998 NBA title clincher -- and Michael Jordan's final game for Chicago -- against the Utah Jazz on WMAQ-Ch. 5.

50.2 household rating for the Bears' 2007 Super Bowl XLI loss to the Indianapolis Colts on WBBM-Ch. 2.

47.1 household rating for the Cubs' loss to the Florida Marlins in the decisive Game 7 of the 2003 National League Championship Series on WFLD-Ch. 32.

42.0 household rating for the White Sox decisive Game 4 victory over the Houston Astros in 2005 World Series on WFLD-Ch. 32.

90s Bulls clearly on the same level as the Cubs would be at a minimum.

because a championship is not the same as a the playoff series to get you into the championship series, that's why.

game 7 of the World Series would be huge. I'd even allow my kids to watch it if the Cubs were involved.

Yes, after the seventh inning stretch

The Cubs were on the verge of making their first World Series in roughly 200 years.

I'm going to guess there weren't many people in Chicago that said "Nah, I'll wait until the World Series to pay attention".

If you think there were then we'll agree to disagree.

well, there was me, but that's because I was there. No, the non-baseball fans and casual baseball fans probably weren't tuned in in droves until the Cubs actually got to the World Series. It's reasonable to expect 60-70 for a Cubs WS.

Hatchet is saying the ratings would be exponentially higher for a Cubs World Series clinching game than they were for a NLCS clinching game, much like the ratings for the Bears Super Bowl in 1985 were higher than those for a NFC Divisional Playoff game.

I think that is making quite an assumption though.

But, even if we accept the wild assumptions that are being thrown out, the 90s Bulls are still right there with the 2017 Cubs and 85 Bears.

Ill bet Game 6 had higher ratings.

Kind of kills the idea that baseball is special and people care more if that is true then.

Actually it probably supports that. Some people were literally so sick from Game 6 they said fuck it.

Its pretty frustrating how difficult these ratings are to find in 2015

BTW, Bulls Pacers did huge numbers nationally too... to answer Hatchetman.

Anyone who didn't watch game 7 in 2003 is not a fan of the Cubs.
