And how many games did it cost the Cubs over 6 years? One, two tops? Most of his bonehead actions were laughable...not costly. Same as today.

And even the best middle infielders make errors. I'm not claiming he is one of the best...but you could have had worse since 2010.

Regardless...I was referencing his hitting. The dude is a professional MLB hitter. Proven track record of success over the course of many seasons.

And he still only 25.

Look - irrationally hate on any Cubs player you want. Castro, Baez, Arrieta, Bryant, Rizzo - I don't care what you think. I'm not trying to change your mind....I'm just going to counter it with logical points and hope that the less stubborn posters and guests realize how crazy you, and others, sometimes are.

Similar to Russell, Castro has been hitting the ball with more authority of late. I think during the time out of the lineup, he has focused on loading more and driving the ball and the results are encouraging. I still don't see him with the team in 2016, just because they have so many other good options and they all make much less money. But this resurgence may well result in renewed interest from other teams in Castro. In the here and now, it's nice to see the good contributions once again.

Nevermind. I don't feel like recalculating. OPS is probably around 3.000 now.

Cubs might actually get something for him in the offseason if he keeps this up.

I still don't like him as his propensity for mental lapses will hurt the team often but I will say he handled his benching like a pro and really lit a fire. Thats how you come back from adversity, STFU, work hard, produce when you have the chance.

Cubs should keep him based on his performance since being benched...unless they can get someone great in return.

He's a pretty expensive bench player.

Who gives a fuck about the future. He's helping them win right now. 2015

He has incredible value NOW. Playing right into a big hand if they so choose to deal him. Bet they do not now. See what is offered. :D

I have to believe there are at least a couple teams that wish they had put in a claim on Starlin right about now. He's looking rejuvenated and driving the ball again, rather than just slapping the ball around on the ground.

I dont know what were arguing about then. I've never said projections are gospel. You asked why someone would think Russell is better and I answered.

Right, but it's really just parroting something someone else said. I'm sure there's some scout somewhere that has a strong belief in Tyler Saladino. If I read a blog post by that guy, I might be saying the shit Steve is saying about Russell about Saladino. I just don't put stock in it.

But the overwhelming majority do like Russell. Its not just one guy's opinion.

As I said, consensus is meaningful, but still not that meaningful. (Danny Goodwin number 1 two times.) We don't know if Russell is any good. We know guys who get paid to be "experts" think he will be. He's supposed to be good. Whether he actually is will be decided on the field. Now that he's playing in the big leagues we no longer need to rely on what anyone else says. Castro has shown you he can be good over long stretches. To me, that's more meaningful than projections.

It's really no different than horse racing. The horse that costs $350,000 is supposed to be better than the one that costs $10,000. That often isn't the case when they hit the racetrack.

The first time I care enough to debate whether the Sox starting shortstop is better than the backup, please put a bullet in my head.

Package him in a deal for a quality starter from a team needing to dump salary. He's owed 40M through 2019 so find a SP owed 60M+ and make a deal.

A QUALITY starter yes! That would be ideal. Not many teams looking to unload quality starters, but a team looking to rebuild like say......the White Sox (who might also like a new SS) might deal a guy like Quintana in such a deal.

Man are you dumb. Sure the Sox would like a new SS, but it won't be Castro. Alexei is better than him at this point

Ummm, what?

Overall Season stats are in Castro's favor, and by a very very large degree in the last two months. You really don't pay attention to baseball outside of US Cellular, do you?

Starlin has maintained an OPS over 1.000 since early August. His last 28 days is 1.149.

He's had a good september....as a part time player in a new position. That doesn't mean he has had a good season. Alexei has not had a great season either and i know you have a boner for Starlin, but Alexei > Castro

Except stats say Castro > Alexei. And I like stats.
