I may be wrong on occasion, but I'm rarely inconsistent, and I'm never illogical.

Modern analytics don't support that. ALL pitchers give up about a .300 batting average over a large enough sample. That's a fact. Are you going to argue with the numbers like some hidebound crusty old scout?

IMU wrote:

He has a better WHIP only because Sale has an extraordinarily high BABIP, which, as the numbers clearly illustrate (and as all the analysts who are compiling the numbers you are parroting agree) is largely out of the pitcher's control. Arrieta's FIP is very slightly higher in a league without a DH.

You should stop now. You can't really win this argument. You've repeated the Tango/McCracken party line consistently forever, but now suddenly when you want to argue that a Cub pitcher is better than a White Sox pitcher, you're gonna go off the SABRmetric reservation. I'm sure you're feverishly poring over the esoteric analysis of others looking for items to support your case, but one thing you will find if you read the experts who are actually creating the algorithms and aggregate statistics you routinely cite is that to a man they agree that Arrieta is having a great season, but Sale is having a special one.

the ability to perform under less than idea conditions is what makes a HOF type player. obviously Sale is not that.

And yet you cannot quote one expert that is saying that.

Arrieta has a lower FIP, not a higher one. And FIP is already factoring in league average BABIP.

How can you honestly say that the reason Sale is having a better season is that he is unlucky on BABIP, but then show a statistic that ignores BABIP and uses league average and that STILL says that Arrieta is the better pitcher.

Also, bWAR (the better WAR) has Arrieta way ahead of Sale.

It's ironic that he won't even let me agree with him that Arrieta is having a better year.

The same way that you can get a correct answer in math, but if you don't show your work or you get the work wrong, you still won't get a full score.

It isn't that you have the wrong thoughts 100% of the time; you don't. It is that the logic you use to formulate your opinions is faulty.

How is that exactly? Through illogic and inconsistency? Every number that IMU regularly cites as important for pitchers favors Sale. Of course, he would love to compare WHIP when Sale has to face ARod and Nelson Cruz while Arrieta faces Colon and Wacha. And syddenly strikeouts on the pitcher side are meaningless. His argument is crap and you're a fucking moron.

I'm glad we're suddenly in agreement on the importance of winning percentage.

The modern baseball fan realizes that Sale was dominant, yet unlucky, today. Nothing to rub in.
