A Really.Smart.Team.President. wouldn't let this happen and would protect the brand. Fucking Irishmen. All the dismissiveness from them to callers suggesting on yesterdays show that Kane could and would show up was, well , wrong. Again. Anyway, here is todays show content. Remember, they don't think Kane is guilty ( WE NEVER SAID THAT!!) but everyone who calls in thinks Kane is innocent. Huge difference.

Patrick Kane has not been charged with a crime. Relative to the Chicago Blackhawks and the NHL, he remains an active player in good standing, fully eligible to attend training camp when it opens on Friday.
Having him there, however, will make life difficult for both the team and the league.
Kane has been accused of rape, and is under investigation by Erie County prosecutors and the Hamburg, New York police department. Reports say a grand jury is expected to reconvene in the coming days to hear evidence and determine the possibility of indictment.
EA Sports dropped Kane from the cover of the NHL ’16 video game, and the league chose to keep him away from their annual preseason media festivities. Commissioner Gary Bettman made his personal feelings clear when he told reporters the incident was “unfortunate,” and said “It’s a terrible thing.”
“We’re going to have to watch the process play out,” he said, “and at the appropriate time, we’ll make whatever decisions have to be made.”
The problem now is figuring out what time is appropriate, and what decisions to make. This is uncharted territory, with no clear solution that satisfies all parties. The Blackhawks themselves have had no official comment on Kane’s status, but sources tell 670 The Score that the team is discussing multiple options in conjunction with the NHL.
Blackhawks officials are aware of the same optics that EA Sports considered when scrubbing Kane from their product’s cover, knowing the possible damage to their brand if their logo remains emblazoned on his chest. They also can imagine the influx of media beyond the usual local beat reporters: here come real news crews that don’t care about future access or a relationship with the team, not to mention national writers and broadcasters from both the US and Canada. Embargoing questions will only make curious reporters more creative, and a roster full of young players from all over the world will have to navigate the linguistic and legal minefield that is discussing a rape investigation with proper sensitivity toward all involved.
WGRZ TV in Buffalo and Canada’s TSN reported Wednesday that Kane was expected for camp. It is possible that Kane will defiantly just show up for business as usual, forcing the team and league into initiating action if they want to keep him away, and meaning they must then abide by any rules collectively bargained with the NHL Players Association. A suspension would need to be supported carefully by rule, and would appear to set a precedent of some kind, with no charges yet filed. The best possible outcome for the Blackhawks could be Kane accepting an offer for some kind of indefinite personal leave until the case resolves, but that now appears unlikely.
If Kane is skating on Friday, the team risks the appearance of callousness and perpetuation of the enabling, win-at-all-costs mentality that has helped facilitate the unending behavioral problems of their 26-year-old star. As much as they have tried in vain to force his off-ice maturation, they have also tacitly endorsed him as those efforts have been failing, going so far as to trust him with the commitment of an 8-year contract extension worth $84 million.
Bettman will be held to his words, perhaps as soon as today. These decisions have to be made.
As of right now, it looks like the unenviable spectacle is about to occur – the defending Stanley Cup champions closing ranks around Patrick Kane, at the same time a grand jury in Buffalo hears details from his accuser, witnesses and investigators regarding an alleged rape.

Yesterday B&B stated "There is no way he would be at camp and they do not want him to be". This is going to be a train wreck show.

That was before loud voices in the room spoke up, etc..

...but wait, Dan - haven't you said all along that there was basically NO WAY the Blackhawk's poobahs were going to allow this to happen and that everyone who called and suggested that maybe Kane would show up to camp and be allowed to participate were morons, enablers and supported rape culture?

It's self-parody at this point. 'Brands', 'optics', his reporting of a mere discussion...

Plus a new slogan for The Bernstein Brief: a linguistic and legal minefield

Explain this to me, someone.

For the sake of beaten-to-death argument, let us for a moment agree that trading Kane is the only morally upright and brand-acceptable thing to do. Let us also presume that the Blackhawks have no other intention, as Daniel regularly seems to imply, of anything other than separation from Kane at the earliest possible availability.

That inarguably means that any team that would trade for him would be a wretched hive of scum and villany, no?

Ergo, what team would want to do that if Kane is such a horrific pariah? Wouldn't that team then be reviled as much, if not in fact moreso for actively seeking to add this bastion of evil to their squad?

It's not that Kane's a real peach ... it's just that any notion of trading Kane as not only some moral imperative but also as an impending action is just six weeks past dumb.

At least the Penn State soapboxing including a joke or two once in a while.

Do as I say not as I do.

Dan has no basis for moralizing. He seems anti-religion, has had his fair share of gay jokes and women incidents, tends to race bait, and comports himself poorly with the public.

"Commissioner Gary Bettman made his personal feelings clear when he told reporters the incident was “unfortunate,” and said “It’s a terrible thing.”
What the hell is this?
How do these two innocuous phrases display Bettman's personal feelings on this?
Anyone in the world would have to admit that the incident is “unfortunate,” and "a terrible thing.”
This is saying absolutely nothing and to deem it any more than that is the ultimate in hyperbole.

do you think any hockey fan is going to hate the blackhawks because they are letting kane play hockey? I think most rational people are of the opinion if he hasn't been charged with a crime then he should be playing hockey. So what is exactly at stake here for the blackhawks "brand". does anyone outside of chicago even give two shits about a chicago hockey team? dan is making up a strawman that more than likely represents less than 1% of sports/hockey consumers.

This whole bit is not exclusive to the Blackhawks organization. Literally all professional sports teams have been and will continue to look past "character flaws" because most fans couldn't give less of a shit about who plays for their team.

A non-scrub professional athlete basically has to be stand trial for murder before people start to seriously consider how that player might be damaging to the team's brand.
