Veteran sports columnist and one of paper’s top earners let go in new round of downsizing after owner Mort Zuckerman’s failed attempt to sell paper
New York Daily News has begun a new round of layoffs that will send one of America’s premier sports columnists out the door.
Mike Lupica, a legendary sports columnist and media personality, was not able to come to terms on a new contract with the paper, Politico reported. Sports editor Teri Thompson also got the ax.
There’s no word on the number of layoffs, but they’ll be company-wide instead of restricted to the editorial staff.
For Lupica, it’s a double whammy: He recently lost his ESPN Radio show in New York.

I read a couple of his sports novels (Wild Pitch, Bump and Run, Red Zone, ). Not bad.

You'll probably be similarly disappointed with 2 Minute Drill, Shoot-out, and Heat

Even though it's not erotic (at least not all of it) I would still recommend Loose Balls...which was written by Terry Pluto, not Mike Lupica.

Sounds like he was busy with the newspaper column, radio show and writing novels. But he should've been
branching out on his own into his own podcast and content site. Now he has to play
catch-up. He might be too old TGAF.

Funniest sports book I may have ever read was Loose Balls. I may still have a hard cover copy of the book if anyone wants me to mail it to them.
I'd have to dig it out of the basement.

Littman: So have you ever done this kind of work before?

George: Well, you know, book reports. That kind of stuff.

Littman:Who do you read?

George: I like Mike Lupica.

Littman: Mike Lupica?

George: He's a sports writer for the Daily News. I find him very insightful...

Littman: No, no, no. I mean authors.

George: Lot of good ones. I don't even want to mention anyone because I'm afraid I'm going to leave somebody out.

Littman: Name a couple.

George: Who do I like? I, like, uh, Art, Vandelay.

Littman: Art Vandelay?

George: He's an obscure writer. Beatnik, in the village.

Littman: What has he written?

George: Venetian Blinds.

I bet he lands at ESPN. They will give him some type of talk show.

There might be a spot for him on Around the Horn.
