Sounds like he's a deserter, but looking at a possible life sentence is absurd. He did abandon his post n put fellow soldiers in danger looking for him. 6 months seems appropriate IMO.

Weird that the convicted felon would be against stronger sentences for criminals.

14 years for the LIBOR fixing scheme seemed kind of excessive to me

How about a pat on the back and lunch at the White House?

Let's let all crimes be 6 months. Do you have any idea what would happen to this country if all military simply desertered whenever they felt like it? Oh join army free college. Oops war time I'm out.

If you're going to desert, you should @ least leave a note on your cot letting them know not to come looking for you.

He was held hostage for 5 years, I'm sure he knows he fucked up. He was with a shitty unit, he'd had enough of the bullshit and thought he could survive on his own in the mountains. That sucks that people died lookin for him..but I blame the Government for having our troops there in the first place. He's not a Taliban sympathizer or a traitor.

He was one of those " survivalists" home schooled by his Religious parents..just a naive hayseed. I'm sure the 5 years as a pow were rough. I didn't like the prisoner swap, but we shouldn't have troops there to begin with.

If the U.S. didn't want troops to desert, they should start wars in tropical climates with a great nightlife.

Nothing good comes with us over there. It only creates more fanatics n more anti American sentiment. Not to mention all the troops mamed physically or psychologically... Trillions wasted.

life sentence is idiotic. the incentive would be for deserters to actively fight with the enemy against being captured.

To be clear, the life sentence is attached to the misbehavior before the enemy charge, not desertion. It means he actively put fellow soldiers in harm's way and/or did not do everything he could to prevent it. Basically, he deserted and did not even try to attempt to help in his own "rescue". It's much more common for soldiers to desert and actually come back. Bergdahl's situation is very unique. I wouldn't expect it to influence future soldiers behavior.
