The Chicago Cubs plan to win a lot more frequently in the years ahead, and they're preparing to cash in on it.

On the verge of making the playoffs for the first time since 2008, the team this week filed applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to drastically expand its trademark on usage of the blue block "W" that it famously flies on a white flag atop Wrigley Field after Cubs victories.

Since 2006, the team has held a trademark commercial usage of the "W" image only on a fabric flag. Major League Baseball even fought to protect that trademark last year when Washington, D.C.-based personal finance advice startup company WalletHub had a logo that looked too similar (though the league dropped its opposition in August).

Applications filed this week are designed to give the Cubs licensing rights to put the "W" on scores of new items. They run the gamut: Backpacks, briefcases, jackets, footwear, cuff links, clocks, cornhole sets, golf club bags, poker chips, bowling balls and many, many more.

It's another sign of the team positioning itself to cash in on its on-field resurgence, with the team in the postseason mix for the first time in years after a overhaul of its operation.

bowling balls! elmhurst steve already in line!!!

Can't wait to see how much tickets prices go up next year.

Right now they are third behind Boston and New York in average ticket prices. I'd assume you will see them raise tickets to their level.
