Because they really weren't expected to be in a WC spot this season.
Maybe losing in a play in with this young team and getting a sniff of the buffet table makes them want to come roaring back wanting to eat the whole damn thing?

I know. It's kind of a dumb idea but does it make any sense?

It's not totally crazy. I thought the hawks getting bounced in 09 gave them the impetus to be unstoppable in 2010. Angry and looking for revenge. I thought that them losing in 09 was what started really bringing it together.
This year's Cubs are a lot like the 09 hawks I think.

Maybe they should be like Notre Dame and crappy bowl bids and decline the Wildcard invitation.

They would set a standard that they don't accept anything short of division championships.

I'm just saying. A taste of defeat makes them never ever want to feel that way again. No one expected them to be here. We all had them pegged close to .500.

Don't get me wrong. I am absolutely rooting for them. I really want them to win. I have been waiting for this for a long time.

My point is that losing this might be a real springboard to greatness.

By the way Farvio I think you just won your FF week.

You bozos aren't reading this thinking that I'm saying I want them to lose are you?

That's not the point.

It's shit like this that I don't understand. Embracing a culture of losing is... no bueno.

Ok. Would you disagree with me when I say that the Hawks losing that tough as hell series to the Wings in 09 was something that sprung them forward into multiple championship seasons?

Nothing is guaranteed, especially in baseball.
2016, 2017, 2018.......they aren't a cinch to make the postseason at any time. Nobody is.
An arm injury or two to a pitcher, an inside pitch hits Bryant on the wrist, whatever.
Hell, maybe next year the Cubs acquire a nut job reliever who tries to choke out Baez because he dares to watch a ball he hits all by himself? Crazy stuff happens.

Nope. Go for it.

I'd disagree.
It was a bunch of young studs on a badass team with a coach who pushed all the right buttons in '10.
I'd agree that the '09 team was similar to this Cubs team...in that they were a year early.

I got the relevant point. When you're premise is "When is losing acceptable" I pretty much stop trying to convince you that you're just rationalizing at that point.

I understand your point Darky, but come on now. Let's see them beat the Pirates then stomp out the roach Cardinals then maybe just maybe lose the NLCS and then they can get pissed off for next year.

They need another quality starter anyway as everyone knows.

If their debt covenant restrictions allow them to add maybe a Zimmerman (i.e another 100M+ contract), then the division should be theirs next year.

This kind of thinking from Darkside made Fridge Perry a national phenomenon.

Oh my god. Dude. I'm not saying they SHOULDN'T go for it. I'm not saying they shouldn't try like hell to win. I'm not saying I don't WANT them to win. I'm not saying they're NOT going to win.

The point, again, is that should they lose... they're not "Losers", it's not a "Loveable Losers" mentality, I'm saying that loss has the potential to turn these guys into monsters going forward. A guy like Maddon... look he's no Lou Pinella. He isn't going to let them hang their heads and cry about it. These aren't the entitled veterans that didn't learn shit from the 08 drubbing they got in the postseason.
They're kids, a lot like the Hawks in 09, first taste of the post season, and a loss like that could light some serious fire.

I thought it was getting Marian Hossa, John Madden, and a full season of Niklas Hjalmarsson.

Once again... the premise is the opposite of "losing is acceptable". What the hell is wrong with you.
The point is that LOSING IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.

I think what you are saying is "if they happen to lose, this long, winning season (ahead of schedule) might actually be a positive for this team moving forward".

I agree.

1984. Niners kicked the shit out of the Beloved. Walsh stuck Guy McIntyre in the backfield for some insult to injury action.

1985 in SF, Da Coatchhhhh went for a little payback and then some. The rest...history. Super Bowl history.
