I wonder whether Ricketts wants them to win it all this year. From a business standpoint, perhaps he worries that winning this year...climaxing too soon if you will...will put a damper on his plans for the next several years. On the other hand, if they win now, he probably figures he won't have to sign a $200 million pitcher.

yeah, for this season, I wanted one more year of suckage. I still hate the Lester acquisition, I would have liked to have Kyle have a season in the minors, play all rookies, et al. Next year, the losing is done though. They're going to get wiped out this year though.

This makes absolutely no sense.

The Cubs are winning 95 games this year...you did not want to make the playoffs? How would tanking in 2015 help 2016-2018?

Do you think Price is more willing to come to a team that won 95 games and looks poised to go on a long run in the coming years, or a team that won 71 games and has a lot of question marks because young kids were kept in the minors in 2015 and no one knows how they will pan out. In order for the Cubs to have 'sucked' in 2015, it means Bryant would have had very few at bats, maybe all in September. Russell and Schwarber would be in AAA. Jonathan Herrera has 110 starts, Arrieta gets traded away.

This is silly COF. You take the opportunity to get in the playoffs any year you can. Nothing is ever guaranteed. It's almost like you don't remember the 2000's. I was
there when the Cubs clinched in 2008 and I had never felt more confident with the best record in baseball and then they laid an egg against LA.

here's how my 2015 could have been incrementally better than it has been...the Cubs don't acquire Lester and Ross, keep Castillo (and lose Medina, I suppose), and nothing else changes. Maybe they still make the playoffs...but I'm not advocating trading Jake, and Bryant would have had the same number of at bats. I just wanted them to play the youth and take what came. Maybe they would have been just as good.

And I agree you want more bites at the apple. Maybe they prove me wrong, but I don't see this team getting by the Pirates or Cards. And I correctly called the losses in 07 and 08. In fact, I called a sweep both years. I didn't think they were a good team under pressure. In 03, I was confident they could beat the Marlins. It's the last time I expected Cubs playoff wins.

It would be nice to at least end their current 9-game playoff losing streak...

I think they can beat the Cards in a best of 5. Those last two series were huge for their confidence, in my opinion. The Cards have overachieved all year and someone new on the roster dies every week.

It's going to be closer than it had a right to be, I agree with that. But Cole scares me. He isn't Jake but he's no slouch and the bullpens could end up deciding that wild card game, which gives you pause. I think the Pirates are the best team as the playoffs approach in the NL.

Yea, Cubs can't touch the Pirates bullpen at all. If the Pirates have the lead after 7, it's over. Arrieta will have to be flawless and the fact he is due to look human scares me as well. The thing that is on our side though is that the Pirates have literally done nothing vs Arietta this year where as the Cubs have at least hit Cole a little bit.

As for the Cards series. I could totally see the Cubs losing Game one or five 2-1 in 10 innings with Ross going 0-4 and leaving 7 guys on base.

You never know what a guy truly is about until he has to face another team's top tier ace in a pressure situation he has never been in before.

That sounds like an endorsement of the hated W/L record!

I tried to explain myself...you didn't need to lose on purpose, I just would have pumped the brakes on a big free agent pitcher pickup and played more youth. That's all.

I don't want them to lose, but I have a sickening feeling that it'll be the fucking Cardinals that eliminate them via jean short magics.

Probably only if the Pirates win.

Overstating it a bit. Didnt they hit and score off Melancon last friday?

Their bullpen is good, but definitely not ungettable

Cubs actually have hit the Pirates bullpen decently in 2015. OPS of around .700. Remove Soria from that and the Cubs have done much better against their main guys...Melancon included.

I can't think of a game this year the Cubs have tied or won vs the Pirates when behind after 7. Maybe earlier in the year? Yea, Melancon gave up a run last time but then he proceeded to make Soler and Baez hit themselves in the face with their own bat.

Just have the lead going into the 7th and this discussion will be irrelevant.

That would be ideal

Melancon gave it up last night too.

I know Melancon has 50+ saves, but he gives me a Joe Borowski vibe. I think he will be exposed at some point.
