I also assumed that was supposed to be the Staples Center. He said something about 2,000 people, though, right? I would think it would be more like 20,000. I could absolutely see how 20,000 could turn far more quickly than the police/Natl Guard would be able to contain it, assuming it happened very early before there was a large military presence in the city.

Maybe the Forum?

Yep. They could have spent an entire season on that subject matter alone. Start with Typhoid Mary and show how it grows.

Was this a natural occurrence? It sure doesn't seem to be by the way the man at the CDC described it.

If not, where did it come from? Government testing on its own people, biological warfare from the outside

If so, where did it come from? animal to human, ancient virus resurrected, what part of the world

Right. The Knife kid in school slowly accepting it? He was already like a full on WD veteran in the first episode.

My favorite part when idiot dad/boyfriend was told "Whatever happens, stay in the truck". About 1 minute later, when they are in a huge firefight with the zombies, who is out of the truck? Idiot dad/boyfriend.

In his defense he probably didn't get his morning jog in and was just getting out of the truck to stretch out before telling the soldiers that he would just jog back to camp if that was ok. Might even stop at an LA Fitness (in LA they just call them Fitness) and get some weight work in if he has time.

Yeah it went full on zombie apocalypse.

Where do they go from here though without making it just another Walking Dead?

I know there'll be more people still and maybe some places are okay, but it's gonna be on the run from zombies and being wary of humans.

It was a good finale. The boat definitely opens up many options to move around without being in danger.
Was glad it was a strong episode and I'll be back next season.

I enjoyed it overall. Strand is the only character I find irreplaceable at this point. I agree with Terry's point that there is no other way to continue this as anything other than Walking Dead: Los Angeles.

Something fishy about that guy, I'm sure there is a lot more than meets the eye. Why was he locked up at the military base in the first place????

A good and entertaining finale that was completely forgettable.

I sense a fizzling out of this one.

To be honest, I wouldn't mind if they instead scrapped it and created something called "Origin of The Walking Dead".

That was the attempt here. They dont have it in them to write an interesting origin. (which is probably why they never had one in the comic in the first place)

The writers are obviously afraid to commit to the story of how it happened.

I would have thought that this would have been the story they would have reveled in telling, as creative people.

I agree with you both.

They may do better if it they set it around the CDC or something, or another decision maker that would be involved in trying to find it.

But you are probably right, they don't have a compelling story to tell about it. It's probably "Government research gone bad". They could just steal the Lyme disease theories.

never understood why people are so hung up on how the zombie virus started. How does that knowledge in anyway advance the story? People are still going to be on the run, still going to be fighting day to day to survive. Knowing how the zombie thing started does nothing to advance the narrative.

Its not like they are going to find a cure next time they are out looting an abandoned grocery store or hiding in the woods.

It's the beginning of the story. Why wouldn't the beginning of the story be interesting?

I did. Its only a minute long. I'm thinking it might be best to just wait till they are all done and then watch all 26 minutes in one sitting.

So far its just focusing on one teenager on the plane calling his mom in LA arranging a pick up and he can hear screaming in the background. Then some Asian lady a seat in front of him reaches over and yanks his window screen down. That seemed odd.

It will be intereting to watch this while trying to figure out who the FTWD cast member is.

because its irrelevant to 99.9% of the rest of the story. Once the outbreak starts, who gives a crap how its started (besides you guys)? How does knowing that or seeing that in any way change where we are at this point?

Also, you thought this show moved slow at the beginning. How slow do you think it would take to fully flesh out the zombism to the point where we would fully understand where it came from, how it happened, why it happened, etc.? That's an entire show in and of itself. Basically, you'd have the zombie version of the show "Caprica" which attempted to do the same thing for the Battlestar Galactica universe and was boring as shit.

The thing that bothered me about this season wasn't the lack of origin explanation.

I didn't think they planned to explain anything. I wanted to see the sudden and dramatic collapse of civilization. I still can't believe that they just passed on telling those stories.

The whole 6 episodes of this could have been 24 hours. They could probably do a whole series on just what happened in the first 10 days in a city like LA. Even if that's too ambitious, these 6 could have been about the first week or so - large venues turning like a Laker game, runs on supplies at the big box stores, people seizing stores like forts to be defended, etc. But, they just moved right on and decided to tell a fairly boring family story.

99.9% of FWD is irrelevant to the rest of the story too so I'm not sure what your point is.
shakes wrote:

It was slow because we didn't get any information on how it started outside of drug addicts had it first.

As I said previously, a CDC based version of FWD would be better.

I get that TWD doesn't really need to know what happened to be great television. FWD is just fairly pointless then if it's basically just the same thing.

I don't need an origin story of how or why it happened, but the whole point of this "prequel" was to show how society collapsed and the beginning of the zombie apocalypse.

Shit it seemed like the "Tailies" from season 2 of Lost.

Pretty sure there is a large contingent of people who want to know the origin or at the very least see a big portion of the beginning. This show was sold based on that general idea.

It doesnt have to feed into the rest of the story. It would be interesting by itself.

I agree about the beginning, but not the origin. I agree that the show was sold as being about the beginning of the outbreak, but I don't agree that there was anything mentioned or any implication that they would touch on the origin.

Considering Kirkman has maintained many years that we will never find out the origin (and that he doesn't even know what it is) it was pretty naive to go into FTWD expecting some sort of origin story.

Besides anyone who wants an origin story only does so because they are too stupid to realize how boring and shitty an origin story would be. Here, I"ll give you the most likely origin story in one paragraph just for you....

******

Some science lab somewhere. People developing some new something or other. Several episodes about playing god vs not playing god debate. Hero emerges, warns of global consequences. No one listens. Lab work goes on, everyone becomes infected but they don't know it. Random death happens at lab, first zombie happens. Overheard news casts of odd occurences with people biting people in the background. blah blah blah end of season 1.

*****

There ya go, that's basically the blueprint for any zombie origin story. If that happened you and Brick would be here 30 minutes into episode 1 claiming that its too boring and nothing is happening and the whole show is just a debate show.

yep, that's what I've been saying all along. When this was announced I thought originally that the full on zombie outbreak wouldn't happen till the final episode. Would've loved to see zombies vs ignorant masses for a few episodes as people slowly started to figure things out.

THats obviously not true. Just about everything was relevant, whether it be for character development or story development. You'd be hard pressed to find anything that wasn't relevant, but good try I guess.

It wasn't relevant to TWD. Your point was that it wouldn't improve TWD to know.

Well, this show doesn't improve TWD. Rick and his crew don't even know these guys exist.
