Do you feel Maddon just throws it to his bullpen guys in a one game playoff OR does he have Lester come in if Arrieta falters?

BF,
Think about it.

It's easier to take potshots at me than answer a legit question.

It has to be Lester.

Arrieta gives you the best chance to win of any Chicago Cub. If Arrieta gives up 3 ER in the first inning, he still pitches 7 innings or more. You don't even begin to attempt to erode Arrieta's confidence by planning on any sort of contingency. The Cubs go as Arrieta goes. He is the team MVP. You don't yank him early.

Besides, it is more likely he throws a CG shutout than gets removed before the seventh.

That's a good synopsis but what if he gets hit in the head by a line drive?

I'd rather see Lester coming in than Justin Grimm.

I'm happy I get to watch playoff baseball in October. I never stopped rooting for the Cubs even the last 3 seasons!

I don't think you can go to Lester. You obviously want to win the game to make it to the NLDS, but then neither one would be available to pitch until game 3 and could only pitch one game in that series. You need to keep one of your top 2 available for game 1 if it happens.

Barring a monumental breakdown, you have to let Arrieta go 5 or 6, then hope Grimm, Ramirez, and Rondon can hold them the rest of the way.

Grimm is likely not making the WC round roster. Ramirez, Strop and Rodney would get the call over Grimm at this point. Cahill, Richard, Wood, Rondon, Hendricks, Hammel... That is probably your bullpen. The rest are bench guys to pinch hit, play defense and pinch run.

I don't know what Rodney's problem was before he got here, but that change-up seems to have them baffled.....so far.

He had to play for Seattle. That takes its toll on anyone.

Except Nelson Cruz.

Disagree respectfully with IMU. If Arrieta is giving up 3 earned through 1-2 IP, you need to get Lester up immediately. No time to be worrying about egos etc. Obviously you need to make a judgement based on the quality of contact giving up etc, but it's a Game 7 situation, EVERYTHING. is. on. the. table.

Agreed. Lester is the backup in case Arrieta falls apart for some odd reason.

I am beginning to see why White Sox fans hate Cub fans. This post and the moronic fans that want the Cubs to lose is mind blowing.

He could have a heart attack on the way to the game too Jimmy, make sure and think of everything.

So Hawg,
It makes sense to go with 8-9 pitchers with 8 bullpen guys in a one game playoff?
People on here are more worried about being sarcastic than actually thinking of the question.

Exception: IMU has given a legit answer. the others that want Lester as a viable #2 are also correct.

It isn't about egos. Even after Arrieta gives up 3 runs in the first inning, he is your best bet to give up 0 ER over the next 6-7 innings.

Arrieta is the best pitcher in MLB. You pitch him every inning you possibly could pitch him.

I think it is a stupid question. What if this , what if that... jesus christ man, just relax and enjoy the game!

What if the Cubs are up 11-0 after the 1st inning? Pitch one of the H's til they get within 5?

It's a legit question. Baker should have pulled Prior in the blowout against the Marlins.

Yeah, that's a tough one. It's baseball though, you never know. I once saw the Cubs score 10 runs in the first after 2 outs against Leo Durocher's Houston Astro's.

Jimmy, I am concerned about you if the Cubs make a long run in the playoffs. Please take care of yourself, I would be lost without your meatballness.
