seriously. That's one of the dumbest statements ever. Very few Cubs fans wanted Soriano after his issues in Washington. He was already viewed as a selfish player BEFORE he signed the huge deal. ALL of my Cubs friends hated the move. The Soriano love, if it existed, was in the minority.
Just like all Cubs fans hated Sammy Sosa!

I feel I'm pretty fair about the Cub despite being a fan and I didn't like the Soriano signing at all. I was all in on Sosa when he was mashing however.

And when the Cubs don't go out and sign big money free agents, folks call them cheap. I guess they're only supposed to sign the "right" free agents, which of course we all know who those guys are in advance.

Soriano was 40/40 with Washington when the Cubs signed him.

I have been on record as not liking big free agent deals and prefer to build internally. But I am a sucker for the Plan. It would be hard to win a World Series without a few big money veterans, and I just prefer to make those signings after the roster is well established.

Am I crazy for thinking that the Cubs are only one legit starter and a little bullpen help away from being right there with the Cardinals in terms of overall team strength? The team doesn't need to fill in a bunch of free agents...so they can afford to overspend a bit to make sure they come out with Price. Not too many good free agent bullpen guys this offseason though. May need to swing a couple of trades.

Cueto and or Price or whatever gets this team to a WS. They will fix it in the winter. This whole year has been a bonus session. Enjoy it. I am.

I liked the Soriano signing at the time, and looking back, I'm not sure "selfish" is the correct label for him.
He really was a good hitter overall and did get better in the field. Never a clubhouse cancer.

He was fine. Still one of the worst Hendry signings though.

Cueto getn slapped around in the A.L. his value will drop some. Price n Greinke are the premiere aces. Can't go wrong with either..I prefer Price.

Not crazy at all. We might need a CF guy next year but that's about it for position players. Our bullpen has kind of been overused by Maddon but that's because the back 3 of the rotation sucks so bad.

I think a lot of us were happy with the signing, but we all cringed at the 8 year length.

And for the record, I loved Sammy Sosa.

That is pittmike posting at its best.

I liked 60+ Homerun seasons. I was always slightly annoyed at how he abandoned the running game.

His speed declining kind of coincided with his new workout regime didn't it? Someone get ahold of Manny Alexander and see what he thinks.

Yeah, well not only that, the whole thing. He was a true 5 tool type and he pretty much just focused on the 1

Sosa never demanded to play an outfield spot, demanded to lead off or showed up Frank Robinson. So yeah, I did like Sosa. Didn't like Soriano.

Shouldn't finish a season 11-12 when you have a 3.34 ERA on a team with over 90 wins. I know the bullpen pissed it away a few times for him but having Ross play every start of his really fucked him too many times on run support.

I would guess it happens on teams that have more than one good pitcher now and then. If I looked up the good Braves teams there was probably one of the three that got screwed every year. Can't have three twenty pitchers on a team usually.

You usually get the record you deserve, exceptions noted.

Corey Kluber and Garrett Richards both have 3.62 ERA's.

Kluber is 8-16.
Richards is 15-11.

Collin McHugh has a 3.98 ERA and is 18-7.

There are so many exceptions each and every season that they are no longer exceptions. They occur enough to break 'the rule.'

W-L cannot be used to gauge a pitcher's performance. Period. I think you need to be a minimum of 50 years old to believe otherwise.

edit: I'm having fun

Colby Lewis has a 4.53 ERA and is 17-9. Alfredo Simon has the worst ERA among qualified starters at 5.18 and is 13-11. Chris Archer is having a good season with a 3.26 ERA and is 12-13. Shelby Miller has a 3.15 ERA and is 5-17.

Not yet. We've got several more years of Arrieta and Lester being a top 1-2 punch.

You mean Lester #3 after we get Price or Grienke this offseason.
