That's so Hawk (and Sox) to do something the opposite of the norm.

Sox can't even get their PBP guy to show up to home games.

I like it. A Derek Jeter-esque tour of all the ballparks with ceremonies commencing in each ballpark.

At first it sounds crazy. But he probably enjoys flying with the team and being driven to the stadium from the hotel and the golfing on road trips.

Compared to that a normal commute from Indiana to Chicago is a pain in the ass.

I will miss him on home games. Probably watch less.

Hawk lives in South Bend that is almost 100 miles from The Cell and at least a 90 minute commute.
200 miles a day and 3 hours in a car at age 74 that is a little much.
Maybe the M&M jacket guy George Jacobs from Windy City Limo could hook him up?

I would guess Hawk didn't commute everyday . Hotel, pied-à-terre, mobile home, suite at the Cell, something.

What does it say that this city has two 24 hour sportstalk stations and that none of the collective on air talent are appreciably qualified for even this part time job?

This would be the Reinsdorfiest booth ever: an analyst being made to do play-by-play and a mute being made to talk.

Weird. You'd think he would at least do weekend home games, or Opening Day, Cubs series...stuff like that.

For all his faults, Hawk is a true character of the game who will be sorely missed when he is gone.

I think the solution would be to move Farmer to television full-time, where his sparse, non-descriptive, and weird commentary can complement the telecast rather than hamper the radio broadcast. With Farmer on TV, you can concentrate on putting together a legitimate radio broadcast with a bona fide play-by-play announcer rather than two jocks having awkward conversations in the presence of a baseball game.

i always liked rooney nad farmer on the radio cuz i thought that rooney was enough of a straightforward PBP guy where you could allow farmio to do his thing and it worked... plus they seemed to get along and have a proper rapport and it was a solid thing,.

but then i think rooney split after the WHITE SOX WINNER..... AND A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP! and everything was in flux. like you've said i think reinsdorf doesnt actually care about the quality of the broadcast as much as he likes to hook up "his guys" and the results clearly show.

and yeah, i echo the sentiments around here that it's a shame we lost dave "drillrod" wills to the rays cuz i think he woulda worked out swell if he got up into the radio booth after rooney left. ah well.

At the risk of drawing out SHARK as the topic is known to do, Dave Wills sounds like the perfect fit for the Sox: a guy with legit play-by-play chops, but also a unique and authentic voice, not some guy off the Syracuse assembly line like Zaidman or the Randazzler. That's always seemed to be the fear of Sox fans when it comes to succeeding Hawk: that it'll be one of those guys and though their telecasts might stop being bad, they'll also stop being special, and that's worse.

I'm not emotionally invested enough to dig it back up, but somewhere I found an interview with an old White Sox radio announcer from right around when Reinsdorf and Einhorn bought the team. Can't remember his name, I want to say he was someone from WMAQ that just got drafted into doing the games. He was lamenting his firing, saying that the new owners were obsessed with having an ex-player do play-by-play along with an ex-player analyst, so this has been an issue with the White Sox for some time. I think the ex-player on play-by-play ended up being Early Wynn or something.

the only thing i can think of with ex-players manning both jobs in the booth is that they figure the technicality of saying what's happening is what it is and anyone with basic spatial recognition skills can do that, but when baseball games slow down to that ebb-n-flow quintessential for bullshitting with your buddies, that's where having a couple of old ballplayers shooting the shit might be more "authentic" to some oldschool idea/mentlaity of baseball being a fraternity that players have the purest experience of.

by and large the biggest problem with this reinsdorf ex-player formula lately, outside of technical PBP skills, has been finding pairs of them who actually like each other. i think that goes a long way in making a quality product to listen to.

Everyone seems to say good things about Hawk and Wimpy. What few airchecks I've heard of Don Drysdale sounded pretty good, but remember that Drysdale was going to be a consummate pro, part of the first wave of L.A. Dodgers that Hollywood embraced, and he was going to capitalize on it one way or another. He wasn't just some crusty old jock that Reinsdorf fell in love with like Farmer.

The only Sox broadcasters I've ever really known are the various permutations of Hawk, DJ, Stone, and Farmer (and Chris Singleton), and all those pairings have sucked. I didn't really acknowledge the White Sox when Rooney and Paciorek were there.

Chicken salad isn't the opposite of tuna, salmon is. Tuna swim with the current, and salmon swim against it.
