I can't wait for this series to start. Five game series, hoping they play up the rivalry big time. Cubs take the series.

Arrieta pitches 3 consecutive games, all of which are complete game shutouts.

Serious question time.

Hendricks or Hammel in game 2?

I say Hendricks.

It doesn't really matter.

It'll work out for the Cubs no matter what.

Pitches will be thrown at batters and some tough-talking press conferences.

Hendricks has had 3 straight games that he pitched well in. Now, 2 of those 3 were against the Brewers. But the other was against the Royals (though it was his first time facing them) and 3 good ones may have restored some confidence in him. I have to believe he gets the start. if the Cubs were to win the first 2 in St. Louis (not likely, but possible) I think Maddon would start Hammel in game 3 too. Then he could use Arrieta in game 1 of the NLCS and get at least 2 starts in the series.

Setting up your rotation for a potential future series before you advance is pretty fucking stupid. Cheers.

Lester and Hendricks (probably) are the only ones set up. Arrieta pitches game 3 if they are tied at 1-1 or down 0-2. But in the unlikely event they take a 2-0 lead, it would make sense to give Arrieta the extra day to rest with the possibility Hammel wins game 3 and they could start arrieta in game 1 of the NLCS.

My theory is that Hendricks was on today's roster but will be left off the next one(s). Maddon knew he wouldn't pitch today but wanted to note his appreciation by putting him on the WC roster.

Wood has been really good. I wouldn't be shocked to see him get a surprise start somewhere. It's Maddon.

I totally disagree with you. I say he starts the 2nd game of the Cardinal series.

I'm waiting for the Cubs to start that Berry guy in LF against the Cards to give them something to think about.

The Cardinals have not fared as well against lefties as right handers. However, Wood has struggled against the Cardinals, so.......NO. However, I can see Richard going into a game to pitch multiple innings in relief if it's called for.

Berry is the designated Dave Roberts or Tony Campana if you will.

Cardinals hitting .320 against Hendricks.

Cards are limping in, but also arguably hitter-wise could be stronger than they have been since the break. Adams, Holliday, and Grichuk have returned. Piscotty isn't dead, and Carpenter seems to have shaken his weird 2 month slumber. Losing Martinez sucks, but Wainwright is back and was throwing 95 last week in high leverage situations.

The real concern is Molina. He'll play, but at what effectiveness..?

OR he could announce Wood as the starter, pull him after one batter, bring in Hendriks to face the probable RH line-up.. It's an old trick former Sox manager,Paul richards pulled.

I'm a bachelor this weekend as Mrs. Scorehead is going on her annual weekend away with her high school friends...so I just planned a "business" trip to St. Louis for Friday & Saturday. Cubs VS Cards. Holy crap.

Cubs in 4. Win game 1, lose game 2, win games 3 & 4 here.

Matheny doesn't really play platoons. his main LHH (Carpenter, Heyward, Wong) are going to play against either handedness.

Someone on B&B suggested that Maddon might try something like that tonight...have Denorfia listed as pitcher, bat him near the top of the order so he would bat in the 1st inning, then have him throw one pitch in the bottom of the 1st and be replaced by Arrieta. Too crazy even for Joe.

Hey, don't be a wet blanket. Let us enjoy the double secret lineup strategy, whether it would have any real benefit or not. Jeeezzz.
