I'm of the belief that if you put the guy on the mound during several practice sessions...and make him throw 50 consecutive throws/tosses to first...He'd get it. Steve Sax might say differently. It's strange that no one ever mentioned Lester not throwing to first when he was in Boston. Then someone in the Chicago media wrote about it and now it's this big thing.

I think it's hard for someone who has never had that kind of mental block to understand it. I certainly can't imagine not being able to just pick up a ball and throw it wherever I want to. I have to believe the "thinking" is the thing. Instead of instinct and habit the guy's brain must start relying on analysis in a pressure situation in front of thousands of people. That's no way to throw a baseball. You can see that Geovany Soto has developed an elaborate ritual to work around his issue.

I'll be honest...I never knew he had this issue before he came to the Cubs. I had heard the "stat" about how rarely he threw over there. I thought that meant he was "crafty" & "wise". I didnt know he had the issue. Not sure if it wasnt reported as much from Boston side because of the way the AL game is typically played or what. Whatever....I just dont get it...and its not like he is the first to have this issue. Catchers who cant throw the ball back to the pitcher?? WTF ?

I'm not sure it was an issue for him in Boston. He did fine without throwing over to first. You would think with all the scouting there is today and all the computerized analysis of statistics someone would have noticed you could run on him before this season, but I don't think they did.

But you know, the answer is really just to keep guys off base. Maddux was never especially sporty at holding runners but it didn't matter because runners were almost never on base.

So you are taking the side of its only the "results that matter". Which of course is 100% true. But how can anyone in their right mind "accept" the fact that a walk or single turns into an automatic double or triple? Yesterday...Cubs were up 1 to 0. runner gets on first...ends up on third....infield grounder to first and he scores from third? That "result" sucks & could contribute to a loss. It didn't yesterday...and I suppose it is what it is, but I dont have to like it and I certainly dont accept it. I think there is a greater awareness across all of baseball about this issue with lester....and teams are exploiting it. Perhaps when he was in Boston it was still considered "crafty" as the AL team awaited the two run homer from its designated hitter.

Well, there are flaws in every player's game. As far as flaws go, I wouldn't consider this a big one. Jose Quintana holds runners pretty well, but when they're on he always manages to make that one bad pitch that scores one or two. Lester has a .620 winning percentage over ten seasons. Obviously, it's not hurting him too much.

Also, I don't think there's a marked difference in the way the AL and NL play the game these days. There are plenty of ill-advised pitch-and-putt attacks in the American League.

Imagine the scene in Field of Dreams when father & son "have a catch" and one of them has the yips. I'd bet on it being Costner. Seriously, I just dont understand a MLB player not being able to "have a catch". Lester is certainly not the first. It's weird.

This is what is so frustrating about Lester. He just has to have Ross catch for him and with Russell day to day you also have Castro in. That's three auto outs in the lineup today vs last year's Cy Young winner. Just fuck me right in my mouth why don't ya?

Yeah if Montero were catching him he might have 11 losses instead of 9.

They'll probably have a DH and a pitcher who sucks at the plate can be tolerated

Gotta be able to field easy grounders though.

I read this yesterday... good stuff.

The Score's resident baseball expert Jason Goff argued today that David Ross should not make the playoff roster and that Montero should start when Lester pitches because Montero is "just the better.player." He then stated that, not only is it the right thing to do but that Maddon would do it tomorrow. Brilliant!

He wouldn't believe Spiegel that that is a horrible idea at this point in the year and that it would never happen, but he seemed to accept it when he later asked Len Kasper who paused as though he didn't know if it was a serious question before saying there's no way in hell David Ross isn't catching Lester tomorrow.

I agree with you Leash in that they should just go with what worked all season. But it would suck if in some weird scenario they were left a player short just for this one catcher.

Yeah, but beyond that, if Ross didn't make roster, your backup catcher is Schwarber which would be a disaster.

Did he really say that?

If something were to happen to Montero, would any of us feel comfortable with Schwarber behind the plate?

He not only said it, Matches... he wouldn't let it go. He was debating Spiegel on it.

David Ross is Lester's security blanket. He might be the 2nd most important person on the field when Lester pitches. He holds the runners at first, too.

But yes he absolutely said it... probably 10:00 hour.

Jeeeeeezus.
No way he harped on this......I mean, I can't believe it because I can't believe anybody that pays attention to sports in Chicago would actually say this, right? I mean.........wrong salsa should probably be a slip-of-tongue compared to this. And he was fired and deported from the south for that.

He's not cut out for this sportsy-talky-hosty job. He just isn't.

Yep heard it live. I guess Mr Giggles either forgot or more likely didn't know that Ross caught Lester 2 years ago in the fucking World Series that the Red Sox won.. Yeah keep him on the bench or off the roster. I texted in asking if he ever has non awful sports thoughts.
