Hendricks to start game 2.

Joe Maddon met with the media in St. Louis on Thursday afternoon and announced his starting rotation for the National League Division Series.

Jon Lester is starting the opener followed by Kyle Hendricks in game two. Jake Arrieta will start game three on Monday at Wrigley Field.

Jason Hammel could be an option to start game four. Hammel will be available out of the bullpen for the first three games. Maddon said if Hammel is not used out of the pen there is a possibility he will start the fourth game. If the best of five series goes a full five games, Jon Lester will be on the hill for the Cubs in St. Louis.

The Cubs will announce the NLDS roster on Friday.

I totally disagree with you. I say he starts the 2nd game of the Cardinal series.

Why you thought Hendricks would not get the nod over Hammel and Haren is hard to figure out. He's been the best of the triple H gang.

It is a little over the top, but there some truth in there too. He knew he was beat sitting in the dugout down 1-0 while his team batted in the first. And this is why a pitcher's W/L record still means something. He knew who he was facing and how sharp that guy has been. He had to put up zeros as long as he could. He couldn't even get an out before a run crossed the plate. He lost that game. Arrieta won it.

Blaming the starting pitcher for the loss when you don't record one damn run is pretty stupid if you ask me.

Opinions vary. There were 11 hits in that whole game. I realize you've lived your entire life in a cartoon era of fake muscles and PEDs and video game numbers come to life, but 1-0 and 2-1 games are baseball.

Well yeah I get that but even with an amazing say 1 run performance over 8 innings from him they still lose.
Pitching isn't why they lost. They didn't get one damn run. That's why they lost.
I mean I know I'm from the video game era but I've never seen anyone with without scoring a run.

Well, the fact that Arrieta's pitching was better than Cole's pitching.

Was it better because arrieta was so amazing or because the pirates offense didn't get it done?
Either way. Cole was not why they lost. You don't win with the best pitching in the world if you can't score one run.

I mentioned it last night, Cole did a pretty good number on anyone not named Schwarber and Fowler. Lot of 0-3 and 0-4's in that lineup. He labored at times and wasn't all that sharp but he battled.

But, it really was the Pirates offense that looked lost. They had prime opportunity to strike with the bases loaded and 1 out but pooped the bed. Night night time after that. They were totally deflated by the 4-5th inning.

Good point. Fowler and Schwarber were all the offense last night.
But by all means blame the pitcher.
I'm assuming that columnist is just a dope.

That is why I had no doubt the Cubs would win that game. Arrieta was not going to lose. The only chance the Pirates had was if Jake did not go the distance. But in the series VS the Cardinals they need Lester to be the big game pitcher in the post-season he was paid big money to be. I have much less confidence in Lester, but he was very good against the Cardinals last time out against them. The Cubs have done well VS Lynn and Wacha this year, so that bodes well. Against their arch rival, this series is going to be as intense as it gets.

Lester has to come through in Game 1 or it's going to be tough to win the series.

But with this group, anything is possible.

Let's hope we can put these cockroaches away.

Has there been any info on who Maddon has put on the roster for this series?

Cole deserves a lot of blame. Letting up four earned runs from your ace in this type of game is pretty unacceptable. It would be hard for me to blame the Pirates for not hitting Arrieta when the entire league seems unable to hit Arrieta this year.

There were SEVERAL very smart Cubs fans telling me that Fowler was a bust as a leadoff guy. In fact, it really wasn't that long ago relatively speaking.

I like Fowler. He has a good approach, a great eye at bat, he plays pretty good defense too. I think he wound up 3rd in the NL in runs scored thanks to a solid OBP. But I don't think he is a must-have by any means. I assume it will be about a year before Almora can take over CF and Martinez will likely take a couple years. So next year it's likely the Cubs sign a stop-gap guy. Who knows, maybe Maddon puts Bryant out there and Coghlan in left, with Soler in right. I would like to see Fowler back on a 1-2 year deal, but don't expect it.

Are you really headed down there? I am so tempted, but I already had taken Monday off for Columbus Day and may just "invest" in tickets.

Yup. Meeting with a customer tomorrow afternoon then going to the game with a buddy. Ok...I'll probably just drive past a customer.

I'll be at Game 3. First time I'll ever see Arrieta pitch in person (if he pitches Game 3). Hard to believe with all the games I've been to the past two years. Bad luck.

for all of the talk about lester and what kind of year he had, tonight really will determine for me whether his contract was worth it. i know his numbers weren't bad, as a matter of fact he had a pretty typical lester-like year, but this game tonight is going to cast a strong spotlight on whether he was worth it. he needs to do more than a 6-inning 3-run "quality start" tonight. The cubs need him to go out and go 7+ allowing 2 or less runs and give this team a chance to win. if he goes out and loses this game to john lackey by giving up big hits at bad times it will be pretty disappointing.

i feel pretty good about this cubs chances tonight, and i believe Lester will be ready to deliver. that being said i hope maddon has Richard or Cahill on speed dial if lester is getting worked over early, the cubs can't afford to roll over and hand this to the cardinals to not hurt jon lesters feelings or somehow justify his contract. if he sucks, get him the fuck out of there early.

I may be a Bull Man but I'm a Cards fan (since early childhood) but I have actually been rooting for the Cubbies to get to a WS for years, hopefully in an off-year for the Cards. But it's come down to a head to head. It's exciting as shit for me and confliction is rampant.

You guys have the superior batting, base running and a true ace in the rotation and by FAR the better manager. I don't know WHAT we got! Carpenter is batting .260, Molina and Peralta have dropped off real bad and it sure looks like the league has figured out Lance Lynn's fastball-only approach. He's been SHELLED in his last 3 or so starts.

On our side Jaime Garcia has been smokin' hot, and Heyward has been money since the ASG. Steven Piscotty (before his collision in CF) has carried the offense in September. It's yet to be seen if that will continue.

There's one thing that I feel safe in predicting: whoever wins this game will win the NLDS.
