Or that Cubs fans are wary of being pulled over by some asshole Irish cop.

 The typical Cub fan metamorphoses like a butterfly. As a child his dad takes him to one or two games per season (the egg stage). He moves to Broville after studying accounting at a Big Ten university and attends 10-12 games a year (the pupa stage). Then he moves in with a girlfriend in Lincoln Park or the West Loop and cuts back to five or six (the larvae stage). Finally, he marries and moves to Schaumburg or Arlington Heights and only attends when someone comps him a ticket. This is the adult stage also known as the Scorehead stage.

I'm not given to hyperbole (or giving hyperbole), but dad gommit if this ain't the best thing written since the Gettysburg Address.

There are less people who care about baseball in Chicago. Unfortunately for the 30K-60K remaining Sox fans in the Chicagoland their franchise is doing nothing about grabbing a smaller pie. You have the Cubs marketing their young stars everywhere, upgrading the ballpark, investing in major talent, scouting, Dominican/Venezuela, minor leagues, promotions (4th of July fireworks), etc. Cubs are pouring money into the organization to improve every aspect.

The Sox, on the other had, seem to take pride in alienating their fanbase with shitty announcers, exclusionairy seating policies and terrible on-field product. It's like their trying to outdo Loria in destroying a fanbase.

It's crummy that a team that's resided in Chicago for over 100 years will have to move but it's reality. I see the Chicago Fire eclipsing the Sox in relevancy within 3 years at the latest.

Cubs would have ranked higher than 7th in attendance if not for the fact the bleachers were not finished to start the season at full capacity and they missed out on thousands of fans for the first few homestands.

I don't see what's objectionable there. How many tickets do you think they were unable to sell?

There are some incredibly complex dynamics that explain the Sox's low attendance and poor television ratings . . . and none of them involve, in any way that flirts with the outer boundaries of reality, the reasons you listed. The Sox have been pretty successful since 1990, they give fans armfuls of swag at more than half the home games and often have cheap parking and tickets, and while firing Caray was a mistake, that motherfucker was godawful.

Apart from racists and hard-core Dems and Repubs, no one trolls like a Cubs or Sox fan. A+ for that, brah.

It is an interesting question. Aside from all the normal Cubs/Wrigley arguments there has to be something deeper. Do the Mets have the same issues?

The reality is there probably just aren't that many Sox fans out there. I think it would be generous to say it's a 75/25 split in the Chicagoland area.

And no this isn't a knock on Sox nation.

I believe it's a lot closer to 50/50 than you think. The Cubs have a special ballpark. It draws people from all over the world. I've seen Japanese guys in ill-fitting suits standing out front taking pictures in the middle of January. That just isn't happening at U.S. Cellular Field. And the other thing the Sox don't have is a constantly replenishing group of twenty-somethings moving within a square mile of their park loaded with disposable income and the energy and desire to go to ten or twelve games a year. The majority of the Sox fanbase is made up of people who are like Scorehead. Scorehead is definitely a Cub fan. But he isn't attending any games.

I dont think it is that close to 50-50. Maybe in and around Chicago it is closer to that.

But get away from the Chicago land and you will see that there are no Sox fans around. I have lived in Missouri for 15 years. I do not think I have ever ran across a Sox fan in that time. I have ran across a lot of Cub fans.

I agree. I'm talking about in the Chicago area. There are no Sox fans in downstate Illinois. It's all split between Cub and Cardinal.

So you are agreeing with Rodney. Matches said its 75-25 in favor of Cubs fans in Chicagoland. Joe Orr said its probably close to 50-50 (maybe 55-45) in the metro area. I believe that.

I also believe that outside of transplanted Chicagoans, the White Sox do not have much in terms of a national fan base, where as the Cubs do.

I don't think that is true. My wifes workplace had two Sox fans, but they were also Chicago transplants. When I'd go into Manhattan I'd see people in Sox stuff fairly often when the weather was warm.

The reason you see more Cubs fans in Missouri is because of the rivalry they have there with the Cardinals. No one in New York really cared enough about the White Sox to make it cool to have a flag flying in front of your house.

I think the national fanbase is largely transplanted Chicagoans. There is a Chicago "type" who is born, lives, and dies in Chicago. There are some people like that on the North side in the bungalow belt, but that type of person is much more prevalent in the traditionally working class South side neighborhoods. For example, I bet Peeps has friends whose grandfathers were friends with his grandfather. The Cubs have a more transient fanbase. All those young people who come to Chicago from cowtowns all over the Midwest via the Big Ten for their first job live on the North side and adopt the Cubs. They may not stay in Chicago forever. And people in the wealthier northern suburbs, they retire to other places, sometimes at a relatively young age. Hell, Scottsdale is like a suburb of Highland Park.

RFDC is correct. There are very few Sox fans in any part of Illinois outside of Chicagoland. In fact, I honestly can't recall one from when I was growing up. That's why the Cubs-Sox rivalry didn't mean anything to me.

RFDC is not right, because he said there were no Sox fans around.

I've spent time in multiple areas around the Midwest. They exist everywhere too. They just don't have the numbers of the Cubs or Cardinals.

The Cubs-Cardinals rivarly is huge south of I-80 and points west so it gets featured very prominently.

Well of course Brick I was not literally saying there are no Sox fans anywhere.

But they are few and far between in comparison to the Cubs and other teams.

I am sure in a place as big as the NY metro area you can find someone wearing the team hat of just about every team under the sun.

Yeah I didn't take RFDC to literally mean there are no Sox fans anywhere outside of Chicago.

It's obviously unscientific, but I just asked my parents, who worked at a blue collar factory in West-Central Illinois for 40+ years, with about 500 blue collar workers, what they thought the Cubs/Cards/Sox split was at the factory. They guessed 55% Cubs/40% Cardinals/5% Sox. I would say based on my observations that that was pretty accurate where I grew up.

Obviously, that's a subjective, anecdotal example, but I think it holds pretty true. Again, I wasn't really even aware of the Cubs-Sox rivalry as a kid.

2005-2008 proved what many knew already....the product on the field matters. I'm local and I'm a fan, but I'm simply not interested in watching the shitfest they fielded this year. It was as uninspiring and unlikeable team I've ever seen.

They do not benefit from landmark and neighborhood benefit that the Cubs have. That's not a knock on Wrigley or the fans...just reality.

I'm not really sure what you were saying then.

The Sox seem to have a following equal to most other Midwestern teams besides the local team(Cardinals/Royals) and the Cubs.

I mean, your anecdotal evidence was that you had never seen a Sox fan in all of Missouri for 15 years. It isn't a stretch for me to think you were making a case that Sox fans virtually don't exist in Missouri.

I would agree with that percentage.

Also, in many of those "small towns" the White Sox are more closely linked to the city of Chicago. The Cubs are viewed as a Midwestern team whereas the White Sox are a city team.
