It's insanity! Nothing wrong with running 5k's but 26.2 rhymes with FU!

Athleticism is the quality of having the kind of strength and energy that makes a great athlete. It takes athleticism to run marathons, play pro football, or sprint down a cobblestone street in high heels without falling.

A friend ran the marathon a couple of years ago and my wife and I were hanging around the South Loop anyway, so we decided to go see if we could catch her at the finish line. Some woman in a beach chair at the corner of 11th and Michigan was wearing out a cowbell and yelling weirdly generic phrases of support, like "Great job!" and "Looking good!" and "Almost there!" and, worst of all, "Yay runners!" After about 10 minutes, it became clear that this woman didn't actually know anyone running the marathon; her life was so devoid of meaning that she just wanted to be a part of something. She was so ungodly irritating that we left after a few minutes, so I don't know what became of her, but I really hope she ended up falling into the street and getting trampled.

if you ran it, you'd know how brutal it can be. not just completed a 26.2 course. but ran the whole thing. and try doing it in 91 degree weather and/or 38 degree weather. i'm guessing most people with the "26.2" sticker did not run the entire thing. you wouldn't need a sticker. you knew you did it.

I admire the commitment to training it takes to run (not walk or run/walk) over 26 miles. But when I think of an athletic achievement, it involves doing things that involve hand to eye coordination, agility, strength and timing, not just running alone. Running a marathon is more about great endurance. Not at all interesting to watch either as most "sports" are. But congratulations to those who are able to RUN the entire 26 plus miles.
