I think he signed an extension for another year or two.

He'll be a coach when he's done.

Ross signed for 2 years, so he has 1 left. I agree, he will be a coach or manager after he's done playing. Probably a very good one. It will be interesting to see how Lester fares with another catcher full time.

For some reason this just struck me as hilariously funny.

Ross signed for 5 million over 2 years, so he has one year remaining....this was in response to a question from golden Jet.

What struck me as hilariously funny were your posts about the Cubs having the same chance as the Sux to reach the post-season....zero and your many posts saying the Cubs young prospects were going to mostly be busts. Bryant, Russell, Schwarber, Soler all turned out pretty solid to outstanding. It's been a tough year for you Joe.

David Ross is Lester's security blanket. He might be the 2nd most important person on the field when Lester pitches. He holds the runners at first, too.

But yes he absolutely said it... probably 10:00 hour.

Ross is far more than just a security blanket. Not only does he know how to handle Lester and settle him down when needed (amazing how rattled he gets for a veteran pitcher, when he doesn't like the umpire's strike zone), but he also masks Lester's weakness at holding runners. he has an exceptional arm and not only can throw runners out at 2nd who got a great lead, but throw guys out at first, before they can get back, after taking a huge lead. It makes runners less anxious to run, even with the advantages they get from Lester. That said, I expect the Cardinals to test Lester big time tonight, with both runners attempting to steal and batters bunting more than usual to make Lester have to try to field the bunts and throw to bases. I hope Lester throws a No-Hitter and it doesn't come into play. but I expect them to expose his weaknesses tonight.

He doesn't mask it very well. He gets run on more than anyone.

While that may be true, without Ross it would be worse. It's pathetic how poorly he holds runners. If he had just an average move to first, he could pick off so many runners. But he's afraid to throw the ball over there. My God, how can you not develop that skill to some degree. Especially being that he's left handed.

It's not a skill issue. He has a mental block. His best bet would be a hypnotist or a chiropractor.

Well hell, bring the hypnotist in then. Maybe have him entertain the team in the clubhouse and have the hypnotist have Lester do a song and dance routine first, to loosen up the guys. Then do the work to deal with his baseball issues.

Chiropractors are the future of baseball.

Lester had a good game. This loss is not on him. The offense failed to adjust to the wide strike zone and let their emotions effect the at bats. This isn't the Cardinals first rodeo and they knew how to take advantage of the horrible umpire.

So tired of hearing how Lester pitched okay and it's not his fault after a loss. He is supposed to be an ACE and be the reason they win.

How can he "win" without run support?

This contract already looks bad. Just wait until the last 2 years.

A 6 year $155 million contract for a pitcher over 30 years old is bad...unless the Cubs win the World Series.

At what point are the players going to start resenting Ross even being on the team? He's a waste of a roster spot.

Yeah Ross is the one who needs to go away. With him batting 8th and Lester 9th there are 2 automatic outs. It is not like Lester has been lights out with Ross behind the plate. Montero needs to be catching. During the regular season I understood it. Montero needed days off and it worked to put Ross out there for Lester. But now that they are in the playoffs they cannot have 2 automatic outs out of 9 spots.

Never, because your 3rd catcher is Schwarber.

Ross is on the roster regardless

Only with Lester batting could Ross be intentionally walked...I was hoping it would bite the Mets in the ass, but it wasn't to be.

I'm wearing the 00 Griswold hawks jersey here.

Worse, how could it possibly be any worse?

Guys take second base on Lester AT WILL.

Honestly at this point, they should have Montero in there in the hopes that his offensive upgrade over Ross overcomes the free 90 feet segments he gives the opposition.

Hard to question Joe, but the Cubs needed a left hand bat tonight. ( wind blowing to right )
Montero not 176 Ross! Screw the personal valet for Lester ( who made bad pitches in crucial at bats ) probably cost the Cubs a chance at a win tonight !

Particularly when Montero had such a great history against Harvey.
