Well, it has to be damn good with an overall 22-6 record. God, 22-6 with a 1.77 ERA and 0.86 WHIP. Amazing season. Rarefied Arrieta.

It is just not nearly as black and white as that. Of course you can believe in and use both.

So, can you explain when the right time to ignore the numbers is?

When your platoon RF is 4 for 4 on the day with 3 HRs, but the other team brings in a new pitcher which his platoon splits would tell you to replace him. You have to let the guy bat anyways.

In other words, sometimes you have to play the hot hand even if the numbers don't say to.

I don't mind that thought, but you do understand it's as old school as the belief that RBI or starting pitcher's W/L records is meaningful.

I find it hard to believe that any manager in baseball would actually substitute in that situation.

Your gut tells you when to ignore the numbers. You understand this. I never took you as a by the book guy.

They likely wouldn't, but most managers aren't going to do anything radical just because doing the established thing will get them less heat.

I'm not a by the book guy. I'm a guy that probably loses to the by the book guy.

And when the "book" is a microprocessor capable of sorting all kinds of data, nobody's gut is better than that. It's like these goofs that think they're going on Fan Duel and going to win because their football knowledge is so magnificent. Sure, they might get lucky, but over enough time they're going to be ground to dust by the guy using an algorithm.

I hope you're wrong about that. I just won enough on Fanduel last night (Thanks to T.Y. Hiltons last catch) to cover all the rest of my plays this week and then some and I chose Andre Johnson who got me 22.70 points last night on his own that already have me in the winning group in my other tournaments and he was my only play last night. This is 4 straight weeks and it's all just from my gut. But, maybe the algorithms catch up with me later on. Time will tell. As Paul Newman said in The Color of Money "Money won is sweeter than money earned".

But the above example just showed a circumstance in which basically everyone agrees you wouldn't go by the numbers. So, clearly, life and sports are a combination of numbers and "gut feelings" or whatever we call it.

Oh, for fuck's sake. Fantasy football is 90% luck and 10% caring enough to check the waiver wire every ten minutes.

Correct. He was selected by 0.8% of those in tournaments this week. I just felt like he was a great value going back to Houston, where he played so well for so long. I thought he might get me 8-10 points, which for a really low salary guy is good. But he got me 22.70 instead. Bonus!

But I think long term, you're better off going by the numbers and letting it sort itself out, especially in baseball where you have a relatively large sample each season. Throwing a hundo on the yo and cashing isn't evidence of genius or a good gut. It's just blind luck.

I chose him, didn't "pick him up". You pick a complete roster each week. There is no waiver wire. You have a salary cap that limits the high end players you can pick. You need to pick other guys who are low salaried to complete your roster. How well you identify players who will outperform their anticipated level of play largely determines if you win or not.

I agree with that, but there are circumstances in which it makes sense to go against the numbers. Having David Ross on the Cubs roster is certainly not a numbers play, but I'm glad they have him.

All I'm saying is that I disagree with the premise that you can’t believe strongly in numbers and also occasionally go against them. In fact, I'm sure all managers do at certain times. And also that I don't give two fucks about Steve's fantasy team.

I agree. There are human factors that the numbers have trouble predicting or illustrating.

Data works better in baseball than any other sport but there are times you just have to ignore it and trust your instincts. Good leaders have a great feel for when that time is.

Hopefully that hard contact is sign of things to come for Bryant. He's been struggling recently.

It was a good at bat. Full count, laid off breakers, solid contact.
