Lester pitched a good game, and I'm not at all saying he didn't...

But that was a bad combo tonight... For the first time this year, the Cubs looked tight (or hungover?). Giving up a run in the 1st couldn't have helped that. Playing from behind can't help a team that already seems shell-shocked and tense. Once they got through three without a hit, the pressure had to tighten, and it was pretty much over at that point.

But it's baseball, and tomorrow is a new day. Cubs will be dogs with the pitching matchup, but this is a game they can win, and the Cards are no offensive juggernaut. They have to do something tonight to relax and refocus and win that fucker tomorrow. If they do, they're in the drivers seat. If they don't, it looks pretty bleak.

Castro looked like he is back to pulling everything to the shortstop. Bench him for game 2 and let him adjust for game 3.

He's played more in LF. Going into Wednesday game he had like 8 innings or less in RF. He looked to be really cautious when "running" for that double.

Schwarber is fine in LF and a game or two at catcher.

The bat plays and obviously he can handle the big stage.

I thought he did fine in RF.

You know you're sacrificing defense for offense with him. He had two hits tonight.

Cardinals are hitting Hendricks at a .330 clip or,something. Tomorrow is going to be ugly.

What was wrong with Schwarber's play in right tonight?

Maddon will have a quick hook if Hendricks gets into trouble.

10 hours of travel to see an incompetent umpire behind the plate. Fuck it. Its time to let technology call balls and strikes.

Well, I think he's in right because he has a stronger arm than their other guys. As far as fielding the flyballs, left isn't any easier than right in most ballparks. You just put the guy with the better arm in right. But they have a few guys that aren't exactly strong defensively. If you want those bats you have to play them somewhere.

Wait until you see the replays. Don Tiny posted a good breakdown of the clown calls behind the plate.

The pitches were strikes.

The k zone or whatever it's called on TBS is completely off.

Look, I'd rather have a reliable third starter, too, but anything can happen, and Maddon's gonna have to have Wood/Richard/Hammel warming up in the first. Like... if Hendricks allows the first two guys on, I'm yanking him immediately. They are certainly not favored, but there's a shot. If they can't get the bats going, it won't matter either way.

Maybe that ump was a let out of umpire school a year early?

There's always next year for him!

I'm shocked they couldn't hit that guy. I still feel they will win 3 in a row.

Cubs win 4-1 tomorrow.

Then go up 2-1 on Monday.

To steal what Darkside has been saying but emphasize it again...

The ump was not good, but the Cubs did not lose because of the ump. The Cubs lost because they didn't get a goddamn hit for five innings and then grounded into a double play anyway.

The Cardinals took advantage of the wide zone and the Cubs did not. Chalk it up to a learning experience.

Lackey got away with his mistake and Lester didn't. Cards earned the victory tonight.
