Looking forward to more patience at the plate and more base runners and a few runs today.

I hope so, but Garcia is another tough pitcher. The Cardinals didn't win 100 games because they have a great offensive club. They pitch really well and Garcia had a 2.43 ERA on the season. He had just 97 K's on the year, but just 30 BB too. If he is on, he gets LOTS of ground balls. As stated in another thread, he has been less effective over the past month, though still pretty good. Hendricks is going to have to be on his game. I like Bryant and Castro to hit Garcia tonight.

Beating a dead horse...but for the Cubs to succeed, they need to see a lot more pitches...smarter at-bats all the way around.

That's a really good point, especially against Garcia. His pitches often are below the strike zone when they reach the plate. Guys need to work the count and make him get his pitches up into the zone.

Yeah no reason to not have Schwarber in the lineup.

Maddon seems to be overthinking this.

You ride the hot bat. Garcia isn't a strikeout pitcher and that's been one of Schwarber's biggest issues against lefties.

Especially when left handed hitters hit for a higher average against Garcia.

Yep...Schwarber has been just about the lone bright spot the last couple games...offensively.

I thought about this earlier...then it occurred to me that maybe Maddon's thought process was...pull away the crutch(Schwarber) and force the rest of the team to stand on its own.

hitting .143 against left handed pitchers is abysmal. i don't disagree with maddon's thinking at all. now if he comes in a pinch hit situation against a lefty reliever...then...oops, sorry.

Maddon is proving why he couldn't win the big one with the Rays. He should keep the same approach he had against the Pirates. Put the bats in the lineup early and replace them late if you need to.

You're looking at this wrong. Schwarber struck out in pretty much half his at bats against lefties. When he put the ball in play he was batting about. 300. Against a guy who isn't a strikeout pitcher it is highly likely that he would put the ball in play instead of striking out.

i still think they have enough depth that it won't cost them a game. if they get into the 8th and it's 2-1, or close like that, he can still help you late.

I understand the common practice of loading up a lineup with right handed hitters VS a left hander. But when the left handed pitcher is tougher against right handed hitters than left handed ones and you are putting a right handed hitter in the lineup that has not played a lot lately, it is fair to question.

I will note that one of the few, slightly bright spots from yesterday was Soler having the patience to draw a walk. That was actually a very nice at bat.

So what inning should Strop pitch?

Hendricks hasn't gone past the 6th inning in a start since the All Star break, so the bullpen will get work. But the Cardinals have struggled against lefties much more, so I would probably have Richard ready to go around the 5th or 6th. Cahill would be another guy I would go to. Wood has not fared well VS the redbirds, thus the choice of Richard. Rondon closes. Strop would be used in a situation where they need a single out. His struggles VS St. Louis cannot be ignored, despite his overall good season.

I'm thinking Cahill. Maddon seems to like Cahill if the starter gets in trouble early. Yesterday's game illustrated Cubs Achilles heel, the pen. This is going to bite them eventually
