Rick, my brother-in-law's co-worker's neighbor used to install garage doors, but he said he also fixed a few pipes. PM me if you want his info to get an expert opinion.

No. The difference that that pipe fitters bite their fingernails.

Bigfan... I know that backflow prevention systems are required in this area for people with hydronic heat and it seems most new construction seems to have them.

a backflow preventor can be installed on sanitary service lines if you do not have an ejector pump (overhead sewers). you can also install them on a storm sewer service if you have a walkout basement or below grade stairwell, for example. checkmate and tideflex are some brands i have specified.

He's wrong..I'm 597 as well and we learned about the U.A. agreement first year trade school. It was on many tests- The plumbers cut a bad deal and the instructors love to let everyone know.

I don't think he was talking about the contract as it pertains to a Chicago union. It was more about a general definition. Hell, at McCormick Place they call a guy who plugs in a string of lights an "electrician".

Pipefitters do hydronic heat... at a much lower pressure than home water pressures.

I'm not interested in arguing about it, but the Wiki distinction of the two is pretty much exactly what my guy said.

It was entertaining to see someone vigorously defend information he had been in possession of for 3 hours though.

"A pipefitter is a tradesperson who installs, assembles, fabricates, maintains and repairs mechanical piping systems. Pipefitters usually begin as helpers or apprentices. Journeyman pipefitters deal with industrial/commercial/marine piping and heating/cooling systems. Typical industrial process pipe is under high pressure, which requires metals such as carbon steel, stainless steel, and many different alloy metals fused together through precise cutting, threading, grooving (Victaulic), bending and welding. A plumber concentrates on lower pressure piping systems for sewage and potable water (tap water), in the industrial, commercial, institutional, or residential atmosphere."

The funny thing is, I don't really know if I'm right. I just know that when I ask a 30 year pipefitter, "What's the difference between a pipefitter and a plumber?" and he says, "Simple basic answer, we work on high pressure industrial stuff and plumbers work on low pressure residential stuff", I don't argue with that guy. I'm not trying to compete for CSFMB Master Pipefitter (or Plumber). Darkside and 312 are welcome to that title.

But yeah, I mean it's not like we're in 597 or anything.

Except that pipefitters do low pressure stuff on residential and plumbers do high pressure industrial stuff.
The real distinction is that plumbers do potable and sewage water regardless of the pressure. Pipefitters do plenty of low pressure refrigeration and heating lines.
